Nine injured in Sturgis Motorcycle Rally crashes

Nine people were injured from crashes in western South Dakota on Saturday, just days before the 76th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally kicks off.

The first crash happened at 1:35 p.m. on I-90, nine miles west of Murdo. Michael Hernandez, a 35-year-old man from Dekalb, Ill., was riding a motorcycle westbound when he lost control and was thrown from the motorcycle, South Dakota Highway Patrol spokesman Tony Mangan said. Hernandez was not wearing a helmet but was treated only for minor injuries at the Pierre hospital.

A 23-year-old Hermosa man was seriously injured at 2:17 p.m. when his motorcycle collided with that of 65-year-old Dana West of Rapid City on Old Hill City Road, a half-mile west of Keystone. Both wore helmets. Michael Foss had serious, non life-threatening injuries and was cited for driving on the wrong side of the road. West had minor injuries.

Less than an hour later, 54-year-old Sturgis resident Jonni Larson lost control of her motorcycle on Vanocker Canyon Road, seven miles south of Sturgis. She was wearing a helmet and suffered minor injuries.
