해치 Haechi- the Rise to Power of King Yeongjo of Chosun

화무십일홍 A rose blooms no more than ten days.

권불십년 No power lasts more than a decade.

A scene from episode 31, where two former Noron ministers who plotted the death of King Gyeongjong as a crown prince, are led off to their fates, condemned to death by suicide. The right state minister a Noron, quotes the classical aphorisms, to the effect that no one who aspires to power, at court, can expect to last very long. Ironically, King Yeongjo, younger brother of King Gyeongjong, will ascend the throne and rule Chosun for more than fifty years, until 1776.

Great plot, great acting, and less of the romance that typically affects Korean historical dramas, to sweeten the brutal nature of court politics in 18th Century Korea. A fictionalized account of the history.

Available on Viki.com plus (subscribers only). 48 episodes broadcast 2019.

해치는 예로부터 선악을 구별하고 정의를 지키는 전설 속의 동물로 해태로도 불린다. 화재와 재앙을 막는 상서로운 동물로 여겨져 궁궐 입구 등에 세워졌다.

Haechi from ancient times in legends were creatures that were also called Haetae, they distinguish good from evil and protect the just. These auspicious (stone) animals were erected around the entrance of the palace to protect against fire and disasters.

For a picture of the stone statue:
