In the Absence - Oscar nominee short documentary

South Korean short moving documentary about the Sewol ferry disaster, 16 April 2014. Original video footage; transcriptions of communications; accounts of eyewitnesses and survivors. (English subtitles)

https://vimeo.com/329617474

The sinking of MV Sewol (Korean: 세월호 침몰 사고; Hanja: 世越號沈沒事故 ),[16] also called the Sewol ferry disaster, occurred on the morning of 16 April 2014, when the passenger/ro-ro ferry was en route from Incheon towards Jeju in South Korea.[17] The 6,825-ton vessel sent a distress signal from about 2.7 kilometres (1.7 mi) north of Byeongpungdo at 08:58 KST (23:58 UTC, 15 April 2014).[18] Out of 476 passengers and crew, 304 died in the disaster, most notably around 250 students from Danwon High School (Ansan City).[19][20][21] Of the approximately 172 survivors, more than half were rescued by fishing boats and other commercial vessels that arrived at the scene approximately 40 minutes after the Korea Coast Guard.[22]

I make documentaries and other short films so I am always curious to see as many of the nominated films as possible.

Also I was in an office building that had a fire burning in an electrical closet for 3 hours. The alarm went off every time they reset it but they told us all to stay put. It was not until the end of the business day when HVAC shut down that they discovered the source of the alarm.

I was also on a plane that caught fire on takeoff when I was 4 years-old. That was a wild one because everyone could see the fire but could not escape the plane until emergency landing.

The film stopped many times during playback perhaps because of this morning's interest in the film. I will try to watch it all again later.

I was indoctrinated during naval service with safety issues, and procedures. Also shipboard damage control and survival at sea training. I witnessed an undue number of military aircraft accidents, luckily only indirectly as a third party. So I found the video compelling. The ships design was a problem they mention in the film. The conduct of the crew and coast guard was unacceptable. The overloading of the vessel way beyond weight limits isn't mentioned but has been reported elsewhere.

I was in a Lotte department store in Seoul when there was a fire. Fortunately no one was injured.

I'm sorry the video isn't working for you. I watched it an hour or so ago with no problems on the vimeo site.

I got the original link from AAK on twitter.
