2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumHere is the difference between the two campaigns:
I've done some phone banking for Bernie. It is a scripted, no pressure call made to determine which candidate a person is supporting. If the caller is undecided or leaning Bernie another volunteer will call back later. If a person is definitely a Bernie supporter, we ask if they would like to volunteer. If so, another Volunteer will call them at a later date. No donation requests are made and we always thank everybody for their time and wish them a good day.
I was contacted by a Clinton phone bank volunteer today. After a 5 minute spill about how important every vote was and how close the race was, she asked, "Can I put you down for a $150 donation?"
I replied, "I'm sorry but all my money is going to Bernie."
Her reply, "Click."
She simply hung up on me. I can't get over how rude she was.

(65,273 posts)rigged economy do not have $150 lying around! In fact, for many of them, even a $5 or $10 donation is a sacrifice.
The fact that Bernie has accumulated so much campaign money from so very many small donors shows that his donors are the sort of people who must sacrifice to come up with the money they donate, but they donate nevertheless because they truly support him and believe he will fight for them.
Many Bernie supporters also donate frequently, though still in small amounts, because they simply cannot afford to donate too much at one time, so they donate a bit more each time they get another paycheck or Social Security payment.

(1,024 posts)with the name recognition that comes with the HRC brand, I'm sure tons of scams have been concocted by hijacking her name as well. I'm not so quick to see it as legit, especially in these desperate times.
Would have been interesting to hear where they would've like the check to have been sent to.

(12,769 posts)I would have suspected a scam but the spiel sure sounded legitimate.

(1,024 posts)but immense opportunity moments like this can tend to draw forth a lot of scum from the rot in society.
Rick Scott I'm sure runs a class on how to cultivate a similar variety of rot.

(1,260 posts)I didn't get the click either way. I told them both no, as I'm not ready to support a candidate. The condescending Bernie caller treated me like I was betraying the liberal community. He also cpuldnt answer my questions with amything better than "Just Because". No manners, no class, very un-Bernie-like. The Clinton supporter just demanded money with no substantive argument. The more I communicate with diehard Clinton and Bernie suppoorters, the more I wish Biden was running.
Live and Learn
(12,769 posts)The calls are not made to campaign for Bernie but to find out which candidate one is supporting. If they had called you previously and you were undecided, it should have been a well trained volunteer calling you back. I can assure you that Bernie and the campaign continually stress the importance of being pleasant and thanking people.

(15,435 posts)to how we approach he other person. Don't know WHERE you got that kind of questioning. We're told NOT to be pushy and stick to script. No rudeness and no requests for money.

(6,994 posts)there is a question in the script something about Do you plan on caucusing.
Have you decided whom you will support..if they say Hillary ..Well thank you for your time and end call, register result and move on.
We Sanders callers never ask for money if they are interested someone else will make the call etc.
if you remember the callers name and when and what county .there is a number to call to complain.

(22,271 posts)Iirc, I think I was calling into South Carolina (I think I've hit all the early primary states at this point) and TWO people mentioned how nice the Sanders' supporters were and what a big contrast with the callers from the Hillary campaign.
Even if they're undecided or even Republicans, ALWAYS be courteous and respectful and that's what they'll remember about the campaign and the candidate. And you're right about the fundraising. It's something we've never been asked to do for them.

(12,704 posts)fundraising calls as the calls from the HRC campaign that are being described seem to be strictly fundraising rather than calls looking for volunteers or committed voters. The sort of rudeness being described is for me the tip off that people making these calls have a quota and aren't simply volunteers.

Sorry 'bout your Hillary call, tho.

(12,471 posts)However, the Sanders Camp has.
Let's see how this turns out. Will the election be won with large donations from few people, or will it be won with small donations from many more people, and more of an emphasis on getting people to participate in the process, rather than simply to ask for larger and larger donations?

(975 posts)"Yep, I'll send you a check" and I'd have hung up first. That way she'll call back and waste more time trying to get my money.
I think I could have drug that out for a few hours. Especially if I kept telling her to call back after my wife gets home who, somehow, just never makes it home when I think she will. (which she never will because I'm divorced).

(12,769 posts)What is the purpose of the phone banking for Clinton? I am curious if it is similar to ours or not.
Agschmid
(28,749 posts)I don't often phone bank, I usually am out canvassing. Today I knocked on 90 doors, I spoke to 20 NH voters and my goals are to identify supporters, work to gain more supporters, and always ask for volunteers if they are supporting her.
Since I've actually voted for Bernie I usually bring that up when I speak to Sanders folks and we usually have a pretty good conversation about why we support the candidate we support.
To be honest I've only had once bad experience while knocking doors and it was someone who was going to be voting in the republican primary.
We have the same goals, build support for our candidates.

(7,638 posts)a whole campaign on one phone call. But I am afraid I would have a brain aneurysm by doing something like that.
Live and Learn
(12,769 posts)But since you asked, I will happily tell you why I support Bernie over Hillary:
* He didn't vote for the Iraq War.
* He doesn't take money from corporations.
* He doesn't support the industrial prison complex and the militarization of the police.
* He understands that economic inequality has reached a breaking point and will do something about it.
* He understands that climate change is the greatest threat to our children's future and will work hard to slow global warming.
* He is honest, has integrity and has consistently fought for economic and social justice.
* He understands that an educated populace will strengthen the country and that education should be given freely and encouraged.

(7,638 posts)I am confused as to how you think you could use one phone call to define a group of anything. It was a passive-aggressive hit piece, and when you can admit to it you will lead a happier life.
