Can I just say I love all three of our candidates.

(17,573 posts)It's a tough situation. I live near Philly and I read the papers and hear on the news, when there are shootings, the residents are complaining why aren't the police doing anything to shut down the gangs and the drug dealers. So in Baltimore, a similar situation, a guy like O'Malley comes along and takes actions to do that. Maybe not perfect actions but it does get better. And he does stuff too like civilian review boards to address police misconduct. But then this is the shit he gets.

(32,653 posts)We're not just talking about billionaires here. We're talking about millions of regular people who would be out of a job once Bernie unilaterally shuts down EVERY private insurer.
OrwellwasRight
(5,170 posts)Medicare is single payer and tons and tons of people are needed to process and oversee claims, root out fraud, provide care, administrate the program, etc.
In fact there will probably be tons more jobs in health care when everyone can get it.
For those relatively few who have to move out of the business of claims denial, they can move into some thing more productive. Do you think the UK, German, and Canadian economies would be les productive if they had more people hired to do claims denial? Um, no.
ecstatic
(32,653 posts)OrwellwasRight
(5,170 posts)And what I said was that most people won't have to. Do you also defend those who work in coal mining and fracking or do you just care about yourself? They'll have to change jobs too. The tragedy is not changing jobs. The tragedy is that in this country, we don't adequately support workers as they switch jobs. It is a YOYO economy, and that's why people fear change. If we supported workers, we could embrace change whether single payer or carbon free as it would not be catastrophic for families.

angrychair
(8,679 posts)This is a logical fallacy. HRC is no more capable or likely to achieve a successful progressive agenda than anyone else. She will, at best, get a "compromise" agenda that will continue to put billions of dollars in the pockets of the wealthy at the expense of the middle class and allows HRC to collect millions in speaking fees from Wall St.

Martin O'Malley:
1. Ended death penalty in Maryland
2. Prevented fracking in Maryland and put regulations in the way to prevent next GOP Gov Hogan fom easily allowing fracking.
3. Provided health insurance for 380,000
4. Reduced infant mortality to an all time low.
5. Provided meals to thousands of hungry children and moved toward a goal for eradicating childhood hunger.
6. Enacted a $10.10 living wage and a $11. minimum wage for State workers.
7. Supporter the Dream Act
8. Cut income taxes for 86% of Marylanders (raised taxes on the rich).
9. Reformed Marylands tax code to make it more progressive.
10. Enacted some of the nations most comprehensive reforms to protect homeowners from foreclosure.
