Binyamin Netanyahu Gambles On Mitt Romney Victory

Israeli prime minister denies interfering in the US election, but his relationship with Barack Obama grows more antagonistic

The political TV advertisement featuring Binyamin Netanyahu and the slogan "The world needs American strength, not apologies" is likely to fuel claims that the Israeli prime minister is interfering in the US presidential election in support of Republican candidate Mitt Romney.

It comes increasing during anxiety that Netanyahu has overplayed his hand in displays of warmth and enthusiasm for Romney while his relationship with Barack Obama grows more antagonistic. Some say Netanyahu is gambling too heavily on a Romney victory on November 6 and that if Obama is re-elected, the potential blowback could be damaging not just for the prime minister but for Israel itself.

Given Romney's penchant for playing ethnic dress-up, I wonder if he wore tape-on payos and a bigass shtreimel when he visited Bibi.

the very next day he should make it crystal clear to Israel, not one more dime of aid if Netanyahu is still in office. I know he won't do such a thing but he should.

and continue to support Israel. We don't like Cameron and yet we support the UK. Israel is our ally, it is just unfortunate that their current leader is a a classless piece of trash. We have had shitty leaders here ourselves.

and I don't have a problem with that but I sure do have a problem with us funding them to this huge degree and having their prime minister literally campaign for the GOP. He is literally spending my tax money to campaign against my duly elected President. It is way past time for Democrats to stand up to these right wing whackos.

Your information is far from being remotely accurate. It is not your tax money being spent. I also find it ironic that in a thread complaining about a foreigner interfering with our election, you would turn and suggest we do the same thing.

you can't try to cut our throat. The fact is Netanayhu is inserting himself in our election, and yes, using some of our money to do so. Lets say we provide 1 percent of their budget then 1 percent of what he spent getting over here to but into our election came from us.

No, what you said, and I quote: the fact is if Obama wins the very next day he should make it crystal clear to Israel, not one more dime of aid if Netanyahu is still in office. That is a HUGE difference from what you are saying now! ETA: You do understand we don't "largely fund their country" or is that another false accusation needing to be corrected?

The fact is Netanayhu is inserting himself in our election, and yes, using some of our money to do so.

That is speculation. Comment after comment coming from Israel is that he is NOT inserting himself into our election. Romney is using his relationship with Netenhayu and that is NOT the same thing and if you can't see, that is your issue along with all of those who keep trying to keep this bullshit meme alive.

Lets say we provide 1 percent of their budget then 1 percent of what he spent getting over here to but into our election came from us.

That is a spectacular use of logic, except it is a logical fallacy. Look it up!

The ones playing with the election are and have always been the Republicans and propagandists. Stop aiding them by perpetuating the myth that Israel is so important that any statement by an Israeli is automatically seen as "interfering with US policy", be it our election system of foreign affairs. They are an important ally, but if you think Israel controls or even has a massive sway on our elections, then you need to educate yourself!

Is it true that Netenyahu has connections to Bain Capital? I've read that in other places, but it doesn't seem to get much coverage.

Romney isn't Jewish.

It's just about the fact that the public should have the right to know if the PM of Israel has business connections with the Republican nominee. If they both worked for the same firm, that's relevant and should be discussed by journalists.

There has been all kinds of speculation. Romney claims the are "bestest buddies," and Netenyahu's initial reaction was "Mitt who?" There are speculations they have all the knowledge of one another as someone who bumped into you in a stairwell and you liked his jacket. Others are painting it as if they are so close, they have a secret handshake. Given Romney has met with Netenyahu recently, they are more likely to know more about each other, but stories are still very conflicted.
