"Hillary, Bernie, Gender and Race: Hard Truths about Bias Among White Male Progressives" - Discuss

(Please keep the discussion about the substance of the piece, not personal attacks on the author, each other or any of the other things these discussions tend to spin out to).

http://www.hillarymen.com/latest/hard-truths-about-hillary-bernie-gender-and-race

"In recent weeks, the Democratic nomination battle has veered into sensitive territory: race and gender. Bernie Sanders supporters are falsely accusing Hillary of “playing the gender card” and of unfairly calling out the racially-charged urban/rural distinction on guns.

We are long-time Bernie admirers and certainly do not believe he is sexist or racist. Neither does Hillary Clinton. Contrary to the media’s attempts to stoke Democratic conflict and despite the protestations of some of Bernie’s supporters, Hillary is not accusing him of being sexist or racist. She is doing something much more targeted and much more significant: pointing out unspoken and uncomfortable blind spots among white males on the left ...

The point is this: we have to speak about (and accept the existence of) difficult realities about gender and race if we intend to make true progress. Denying the gender gap on the left doesn’t help the progressive movement. It hurts it. And pretending that white male progressives are automatically immune from deeply-ingrained institutional and cultural biases hinders our progress on the path to true fairness and justice ...

Hillary is hitting sore spots, thus the reaction from some of Bernie’s supporters. But those sore spots are weak links in the progressive chain that must be addressed. We can only hope that speaking hard truths doesn’t expose Hillary to ugly Republican-style attacks from other Democrats."

DU and other sites that favor the challenger are perfect environments focus grouping potential arguments against him.

Is it impossible for you to understand the concept of just listening to what others' opinions are without an ulterior motive?

Interesting.

It's interesting to study the difference between substantive and rhetorical discussions. They rarely coexist in the same thread and substantive threads tend to be slower and more compact as they require more investment in studying the subject matter. Just a facet of human nature I think.

I noticed our friend arrived at DU in 2008 --hmmm, wonder what else was going in in 2008? I have long noticed that some posters appear/disappear only around campaign/election time.

Biases do exist among some male progressives. There's no question about that. Biases exist in almost everyone's thinking at some level. Are gender and race biases universal among white male progressives? Of course not. Do those biases matter, where they exist? Of course they do. Should we try to eliminate such biases? Absolutely.

You seem to have found this article interesting. It would be interesting to hear why you found it interesting enough to post part of it and link to the article. Did you form an opinion about what the article said? Please share that opinion with us, if you did.

Thanks very much.

in considering the content of this piece because Peter Daou has been a longtime Clinton employee/consultant.

And I, as a woman and feminist, really don't want to get schooled by men on gender in general, and by THOSE men in particular on how I should be viewing how Hillary Clinton is running her campaign.

Stopped reading at...

Bernie Sanders supporters are falsely accusing Hillary of “playing the gender card”

1. Blatant bias. Don't care for it.

2. It's obvious she's been playing that card for quite some time.

"Yes, finally fathers will be able to say to their daughters, you too can grow up to be president."

http://www.usnews.com/news/the-report/articles/2015/10/23/hillary-clinton-plays-the-gender-card

I don't recall Obama saying, "If I'm elected, then all black people..." He didn't play the race card sooo.... Hillary definitely did. Undisputable.
