That's a higher viewership than the previous debate. Not bad, I think.

(146,287 posts)I imagine Iowa residents tuned in, since their caucuses are coming right up. That 9 million doesn't count those who DVRed the debate for later viewing, of course.

(146,287 posts)the GOP clown show, I think. Even a lot of Democrats tune in on the Republican debates, just for the Lulz.

(31,849 posts)I wonder how many people that watched the republican debate were Democrats ... with bottles of adult beverages and talking point Bingo cards, at the ready, just waiting for the stupidest comment of the evening?
MineralMan
(146,287 posts)but none of the later ones. I rarely laugh at the same jokes twice.

(13,889 posts)I admit that this is largely for the entertainment value of watching the GOP self-destruct. I have been known to abandon the Democratic debate and catch up the following day due to preferring to spend quality time on important things like sex and drugs.

We have three candidates, and our debates are serious. They have a baker's dozen or so, and it's a laugh a minute production. Lots of people tuning in for the laughs.
anigbrowl
(13,889 posts)As you have previously commented in threads on the subject I know you are well aware that viewership is up on previous election cycles.
jeff47
(26,549 posts)Tell me again how great it is that Republicans get 18M viewers and we get 9M.
anigbrowl
(13,889 posts)and not to the GOP debate so reliably being a complete shitshow that you can make a drinking game out of it.
jeff47
(26,549 posts)No? Huh.
And who could have predicted that the Saturday before Christmas or the Sunday in the middle of a 3-day weekend would have low viewership?! Oh wait!! The networks did. But hey, clearly they know less about ratings than DWS.
Please stop pretending everyone around you is a moron. It does not reflect well upon you.
anigbrowl
(13,889 posts)Except to the gullible. I don't think everyone around me is a moron, only the ones that are satisfied with simplistic arguments.
jeff47
(26,549 posts)You need proof that debates got similar viewership in both parties in 2008, yet we're getting half the Republican viewers this time. You need proof that it's a shitty schedule when everyone with the smallest bit of a clue is aware of and talking about the awful schedule.
Blind partisanship is not a virtue. Nor is it an effective means of making a reasonable discussion.

(146,287 posts)The Democratic debates are serious. The Republican ones are comedy shows. Comedies always do better on TV, it seems.

(6,568 posts)During the primaries, the Republicans watch the Republican debates, and the Democrats watch both debates. The independents usually don't start to tune in until the general.

(522 posts)I watched it on You Tube this morning?
MineralMan
(146,287 posts)the time they air. There's really no way to measure viewership of later watchers.
These days, people who timeshift viewing are very numerous. Lots of DVRs were set to record the debate. Others, like you, watched it in another way. The ratings don't reflect that.
However, YouTube says that 1,587,937 people have viewed the full debate recording on YouTube.
1.5 million is pretty good.
Thanks
MineralMan
(146,287 posts)Think about this: About 35 Million people voted in all of the Democratic primaries in 2008. That means that roughly a third of that number tuned in to last night's debate. That's not bad at all, really.
Just saying...

(146,287 posts)That's for the full debate. They also have a highlight video. I didn't look at the count on that.
Add that YouTube viewer count to the total.
Also, almost every Democrat who watched the debates will actually turn out and vote in the primaries or caucuses. They're reaching an excellent percentage of people who will actually vote.

(12,655 posts)people are naturally going to start plugging in. reaching a lot of people for the dem message.
unfortunately, m$nbc has decided to be the trump channel. they cover his events live in full...even fox isn't doing that......

(12,655 posts)i guess that would change the math a bit.
jeff47
(26,549 posts)That 1.3M is YouTube viewers watching it after-the-fact. All of the debates are available online after-the-fact. Also, that 1.3M includes repeat viewers, not unique viewers.
If you want to discuss people who watched it live, you'll need to drop those. If you want to talk about people who ever saw the debates, you'll need to add similar numbers to the previous debate.

(22,308 posts)Go ahead and plug in 9 million for the last number. Only slightly higher than the 8.5 million from the last debate.
Most of us don't like that the (R)s are getting more viewers for their debates than we are. I wonder why you are satisfied the terrible numbers.
