Voter suppression at Ft. Hood

Fort Hood is one of the largest United States military installations in the world, and is the home of III Corps, 1st Cavalry Division, 13th Sustainment Command, First Army Division West, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, 41st Fires Brigade and many other corps and echelons above corps units.
"I called the Fort Hood Voting Assistance Center in Building 4230 on phone line 254-553-8683, today, September 17, 2012,
and I heard a recording that says it is too late to register to vote. Voter registration is not over for the upcoming election until 10/9/12.
This is voter suppression.
Voting on Fort Hood is extremely poor. The last time I worked the three precinct-polling site on CTC (Central Texas College) for Fort Hood soldiers, no soldier came in to vote. There must be at least 50,000 people on Ft Hood. We have informed the United States Justice Department, the TX Secretary of State, MSNBC, Bell County Election office and CNN only because I have been working on bringing the poor voting patterns for Fort Hood to Bell County Election personnel's attention for quite some time. The election office workers are elected to office. There is a lot of voting power on Ft. Hood. It is in their favor to suppress that kind of voting power. For years it has been usual to have very few soldiers vote from Ft. Hood, but it does not seem to concern the election office in Bell County. The polling location for Ft. Hood precincts is in a remote location and relatively unmarked on election days. All next week there is a campaign steered by Senator Cornyn for out of State voter registration for Ft. Hood soldiers. We are making certain that if they live in Texas, they will be registered in Texas." This information comes from Dr. Claudia Brown (D) who is running for Texas House, District 54.

Having served in the military, I and nearly all others I knew in the military voted absentee in their state of residence. Probably the same thing is going on at Ft Hood-not many are declaring residency there hence low turn at at your polling station.

"We are making certain that if they live in Texas, they will be registered in Texas. I have received 24,000 mail in voter registration cards, and I have set aside 4,000 from Texas voters. " That's not 50k but it's a lot more than are voting in the Killeen area whether absentee or in person. BTW, these are the people who able to vote absentee in Texas: You may vote absentee in Texas if you are:
going to be away from your county on election day and during early voting; sick or disabled; 65 years of age or older on election day; or
confined in jail, but eligible to vote.

Texas is Oct 9.

Wonder why they even have a recording with the date. Shouldn't they say come by and check or look on-line for your state?

I believe they have a different form for absentee ballot request also - a standard form for the military.
