2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI see Hillary winning at the end
I made my choice. Sanders, a good guy, he has to win the Rust Belt. Hillary Clinton, with all her flaws, is the electable choice. Yes, the GOP will discuss the email crap, but she will win. Bernie is a good man, but I don't think he can win.

Two weeks before the primaries, Bernie has exceeded the numbers he needs to win Iowa NH, and is already building on NV, SC and the 11 states on Super Tuesday. Clinton is not prepared.
Clinton is putting all of her marbles on the first four states, and she won't be able to achieve what she is seeking. As a matter of fact, I think after Super Tuesday, if Clinton doesn't have the momentum, her superdelegates will start dropping like flies to back Bernie.
The SD's probably does not want to take forever to get the nomination secured like it did in '08. Remember Michigan and Florida? What a mess.

Hillary win = low turnout, lesser chance of winning the White House and down ballot elections.
Bernie win = high voter turnout, greater chance of winning (he already polls much better against the GOP), & more wins on the downballot elections. Also helps rebuild a very broken party on the local level with new progressive blood.

(755 posts)Yes, it is an important topic, but most Americans don't care whether or not their friend or neighbor is suffering economically. We're taught in school, every individual for themselves, and I don't know if it will play well with the general electorate. DU is not representative of the country. I will vote for Bernie or Hillary in the general, but she will likely win the nomination.

(19,537 posts)Most Democrats DO care about income inequality and are going to prioritize that as an issue in the primaries. And most of them also would agree with our European friends that single payer health care is a lot more cost efficient in providing decent health care to everyone that is sustainable without being vulnerable to costs from parasites taking money from it like our current system has that prevents it from being fully effective for most Americans.
What would be a higher priority to have Democrats vote against their positions on these issues, especially when polls now show that Bernie does better against Republicans in a general election than Hillary does. I think whatever reason there is isn't being stated much, because the reason doesn't sell to most people but just a handful of the 1% that wants to continue to pay to control the agenda and actions of both parties to reward themselves. But it's harder to sell against someone like Bernie now when there are less other reasons, if any, for average Americans to want to vote against him any more.

Lack of medical care kills people. She is content with the ACA, which (even if its better than nothing) still has millions of people left without an ounce of medical care.
Why would a democrat be ok with millions suffering?? No clue. I cannot speak for her. But i will not in a million years support her, if she still preaches for status quo and has no desire to fight for single payer.

(755 posts)I mean, in other countries, it just does not get favorable reviews. If that person can't afford health care because they don't have a job, why give it to that person, when they're not paying into it? It just doesn't work.

Countries that have single payer systems have overall better health care at lower cost, and most people in those countries think our system is insane. http://www.commonwealthfund.org/publications/fund-reports/2014/jun/mirror-mirror
The reason single payer is better is that it's much cheaper than what we have now and everybody can get health care. Sick people are also a drag on the economy, even if you don't give a damn about them if they don't have a job (sounds pretty GOP to me). And why should we pay vast sums of money to private insurers just so they can pay outrageous salaries to a bunch of parasitic CEOs?

Stop reading right wing sites and you will see what is so good about it. Better yet, go to one of these countries.
You do realize that you and everyone else already pays for someone without a job's health insurance, right? If that person is on Medicaid, you are already paying taxes towards it. If they are on Medicare, you are already paying taxes towards it.
Please at least educate yourself on this topic!

(5,614 posts)americans are stupid? Not really. Have they been lied to for most of my life? Certainly.
The New Deal was certainly not popular with the PTB. Roosevelt had the support of millions of real people and made it work. Social Security, Medicare, many other things were not popular with the PTB but determined people made them work.
It makes no sense to be cynical if you want change. Certainly there are those who would have you believe that nothing can be done. NOthing will changed.
Sanders, etc., stand for "ahem" hope and change and also "change you can believe in." There are a lot of us out here that look at this as the last chance for America.
We look around at the political, and moral, standards of the ruling class and are not pleased.
That is why the slogan making the rounds is "fuck this shit."
