When Hillary was a senator what did she specifically do to improve lives of African Americans?

I'm interested to know what she did that accounts for the apparent loyalty of AA voters.

When I look at Bernie's record I see he has fought tirelessly and achieved much for veterans so the the loyalty of vets for Bernie is understandable. What can Hillary point to that is comparable. I don't see it. Am I missing something?

Bill and Hillary Clinton came in like a breath of fresh air. People liked them, Bill Clinton especially, and remember them fondly, if not always accurately. Bill Clinton could have walked into a 3rd term if it was allowed.

The people (many of them) just love the Clintons. Still.

They both sponsored 2 bills. Probably you just clicked on the sponsored field for Bernie which gave you the response of 2.

Hillary cosponsored 33 and Bernie cosponsored 87 in the same category.

Easily viewed.

29. Did you ask for sponsor OR cosponsor
Sun Jan 24, 2016, 07:48 PM
Jan 2016

This list includes anything where HRC signed on as a cosponsor. The search for Bernie turning up just 2 bills likely looks for lead sponsor. Note that even a bill like say SCHIP that was Kennedy/Hatch would likely have had Hatch first as the Republicans controlled the Senate then.

Using searches has problems:
1) lots of important things get done by getting things accepted into a big bill - either in committee or via an amendment - that could be accepted by both sides or via a vote. Yet that will not show here

2) A list - like the one for HRC that contains everything she cosponsors included things that everyone supported.

The fact is that Sanders did get to chair a committee - something HRC never did because she was too junior compared to her peers. It is FAR more likely that you are the cosponsor of a major thing if you chair a committee. There are bills, introduced for several Congresses - each time winning more co-sponsors - each time remanded to a committee, When the bill has enough support, it might be accepted into the bill the committee is working on. In the process, the person who may have introduced it, sponsored it and lobbied to get enough support may not even be a sponsor of the main bill if he/she is not on that committee. Obviously, that person and their staff definitely had a major role.

Hillary Clinton was a Senator from 2001 to 2009. The Democrats controlled the Senate for part of 2001 (after Jeffers switched to Independent. and 2000 - at this point, Clinton was a very Junior Senator. Then they had control from 2007 through the end of her time -- but for most of that time, she was working hard on becoming President. She really was not a power house in the Senate.

I did not ask for everything she co-sponsored.

20. I'm curious why her name is not listed as Sponsor on hardly any.

Then, of course, there are articles like this starting to appear. This reflects the reality that seems more real to me.

As is Bernie Sanders - which when I do the search comes in at 89 sponsored or cosponsored and about 4 pages as well. Both Clinton and Sanders have 2 that they sponsored. Bernie has 87 cosponsored and Hillary has 33 cosponsored. It's understandable that Sanders has more. He's been in the Senate since 2006 - so 10 years. Hillary was only in the Senate for 8 years.

And no I'm not going to cut and paste so many. It's way too hard. But anyone can do the search - just remember to click on the same Subject for both - and then also cosponsored and sponsored for both. Best way to compare.

He did support civil rights and minority issues in the House as well. So in Senate - it's 27 for Sanders in 10 years and 33 for Clinton in 8 - in that particular policy issue. All told - I'd say they both have good records. That is unless you really want to make this some kind of Clinton vs Sanders thing and then I'm sure I can go back and find other policy subjects where Sanders is way ahead. That would just be silly. I prefer to say they have good records in this issue.

I asked what Hillary did as a senator to directly improve the lives of AA's that would be comparable what Bernie has done for vets. How does cosponsoring bills regarding genetic engineering improve AA lives?

Well in that case -

she did cosponsor with Lamar Alexander a resolution celebrating Black History Month.

with Mary Landrieu - a resolution apologizing to victims of lynching

She did sponsor the Civil Rights History Project Act of 2008 - which would establish an oral history project

I might have missed one or two.

Bernie and Vets:

There are just so many I can't copy them all here - so here's a link: https://www.congress.gov/member/bernard-sanders/S000033?resultIndex=2&q=%7B%22search%22%3A%5B%22Bernie+sanders%22%5D%2C%22subject%22%3A%22Armed+Forces+and+National+Security%22%7D

That is my take here and by party operatives. Also, should you choose to back someone different than her for president, you represent something racist by default and are a socialist extremist. Those are the messages I have received loud and clear so far as well as engaging in misogyny.

The answer is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!

What she has done to hurt them:

Supported NAFTA...closed down 60,000 factories and lost millions of job, many AA lost their jobs

Supported her husband's Welfare Reform which disproportionately hurts women and children of color

SUPPORTS PRISONS FOR PROFITS which disproportionately affects the AA community.

It bewilders me that she gets so much support in the AA community given the way she treated Obama in the 2008 primary. Of corse she made up with him after for political reasons. Furthermore her neo-liberal economic and trade policies will be a continuing disaster to the AA community - income inequality and poverty will increase.

Sanders will be a steadfast champion for the AA community on economic, health, education, and racial justice issues. He is the real deal. The AA community will be missing out on a once in a generation chance if they go with Clinton.

Too bad that African Americans aren't as enlightened as you are . . .

And folks wonder why black voters aren't flocking to Bernie Sanders, which we would surely do if we understood as well as he and supporters do what is in our best interests
