Bernie's VERY IMPORTANT point for women to consider

He never talks about Social Security without promising women that he will work to expand benefits for women who have stayed at home caring for their families.

This is really, really important.

Many older women live in reduced circumstances because they did not earn social security credits during the years when they stayed home to care for family members. Work credits should be theirs for those years.

Recognition of caregiving as WORK. Preach it, Bernie.

2. Governor O'Malley's plan includes this:
Tue Jan 26, 2016, 02:30 PM
Jan 2016

'Reform Social Security to support, rather than penalize, caregiving. Governor O’Malley supports providing up to five years of “caregiver credits” that would increase the 35-year wage base for those who spend an extended period of time providing full-time care for children, elderly parents, or other dependents. In practice, current methods of calculating benefits penalize workers, most often women, who take extended time off to care for their families.'

on all issues, not just reproductive choice. Economic issues like these are feminist issues too. WTG, grasswire. You've made an excellent point. K & R.

....as you say, a feminist issue. Equal Social Security retirement pay for caregivers, men or women. Stay at home dads suffer from this, too, eventually.

But those who suffer most currently are older women who not only were caregivers, but who were likely in low paying jobs when they DID work.
