Another SC State Rep Endorses Sanders

From Post and Courier

Charleston’s Rep. Wendell Gilliard announced Tuesday he was supporting the Vermont Senator, because he is fighting to address the issues that matter the most to African-Americans.

“He is a leading voice in the movement to end the failed “War on Drugs” that has crippled communities of color and has proposed the most substantive solutions of any candidate in the race to end the disastrous era of mass incarceration,” said Gilliard in a written statement. “Bernie consistently affirms the importance of black lives, by insisting that police forces reflect the diversity of their communities and advocating for body cameras to ensure greater officer accountability.”

Thanks to our First Amendment-protected garbage dump, where actual news goes to die, our Presidential campaign is now a mash up between a soap opera and reality TV.

27. Charleston has 25.4% black population
Wed Jan 27, 2016, 12:36 PM

It is the oldest & 2nd largest city in South Carolina, with a population of 357,704.

Fun facts:

In 2006, Charleston's residents voted against Amendment 1, which sought to ban same-sex marriage in South Carolina. Statewide, the measure passed by 78% to 22%, but the voters of Charleston rejected it by 3,563 (52%) to 3,353 votes (48%).
Charleston is becoming a prime location for information technology jobs and corporations, and has experienced the highest growth in this sector between 2011 and 2012 due in large part to the Charleston Digital Corridor.

In 2013, the Milken Institute ranked the Charleston region the ninth-best performing economy in the US due in large part to the growing IT sector. Notable companies include Blackbaud, SPARC, BoomTown, CSS, and Benefitfocus.

Higher education is also an important sector in the local economy, with institutions such as the Medical University of South Carolina, College of Charleston, The Citadel, and Charleston School of Law. In addition, Charleston Southern University is located in nearby North Charleston. Charleston is also an important art destination, named a top-25 arts destination by AmericanStyle magazine.[76]

28. The Endorsement Primary
Wed Jan 27, 2016, 12:38 PM
Jan 2016

I am amused by Sanders supporters who want to talk about endorsement. Nate Silver's 538 website is keeping track of the endorsements that count http://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2016-endorsement-primary/

In presidential primaries, endorsements have been among the best predictors of which candidates will succeed and which will fail. So we’re keeping track.

Hillary Clinton 459
Bernie Sanders 2
Martin O'Malley 1

Before any votes are cast, presidential candidates compete for the support of influential members of their party, especially elected officials like U.S. representatives, senators and governors. During the period known as the “invisible primary,” these “party elites” seek to coalesce around the candidates they find most acceptable as their party’s nominee. Over the past few decades, when these elites have reached a consensus on the best candidate, rank-and-file voters have usually followed.

Of course, not all endorsements are equally valuable. We use a simple weighting system: 10 points for governors, 5 points for U.S. senators and 1 point for U.S. representatives (there are roughly five times as many representatives as senators and 10 times as many representatives as governors).

These are the endorsements that will matter

For me -- and many like me -- state official endorsements matter quite a bit to the people who live (and vote) in those states.

I'm amused people care what Nate says matters. I mean, if I listen to Nate -- based on 459 to 2 or 1 . . . Hillary should be doing a helluva lot better than she is in those early primary states.

Personally, I wouldn't dare to tell any person voting in any state who's endorsement should matter to them - but just in case someone in a particular state is interested . . . so far here's a list of current state officials endorsing Bernie. You know the old saying - "politics is local".

There is no R and D in that context. It's not Red or Blue...it's Green. So, trust me real Bernie supporters do not cringe every time another 1%er endorses our 6 figure speech Hill. Ho hum.

Bernie is after the ones who gave up, the little guys with their $30 and 1 vote...and it seems to be working. You make the case for the 1% quite well. That's how they got there.

That's why a Revolution is needed...a real one...with an old guy who firmly believes and provides a path so the unwashed masses will discover there is a place for them in this country...economic and political.

It's too early to crow...and that "rating system" rates the Establishment.

Stay amused. And check that Bernie is now ahead in both Iowa and NH. Quick, more debates!!!
