Pelosi dismisses portions of Sanderss tax and health-care agenda: Its not going to happen
By Paul Kane January 27 at 4:06 PM
BALTIMORE House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) dismissed portions of Bernie Sanderss agenda Wednesday, welcoming the Vermont senators energetic support for his presidential bid but declaring that some of his deeply liberal ideas were unrealistic.
Kicking off a three-day retreat of House Democrats in her childhood home town, Pelosi said that the partys agenda would not include a call to raise taxes and would continue to embrace the Affordable Care Act that Democrats bitterly fought for in 2010. Pelosis remarks came two days after Sanders, in an Iowa town-hall gathering, explicitly endorsed higher taxes to fund a sweeping revision of health laws.
Were not running on any platform of raising taxes, Pelosi told reporters inside the Hyatt Regency in Baltimores Inner Harbor, less than a mile from her childhood home. While the liberal House leader has remained publicly neutral in the Democratic primary process, Pelosis position echoed some of the themes that former secretary of state Hillary Clinton has hit on in trying to say that Sanderss ideas, while appealing to liberals instincts, are out of touch in an era when Congress is so sharply divided.
She reiterated her previous remarks embracing Sanderss surge in recent weeks God bless all the people who have gotten enthusiastic but stressed that Sanders needs to bring those voters into the Democratic fold in the November general election.

Pledging to raise taxes on the poor and middle class is political suicide. Pelosi knows this.
If Bernie can't convince Democrats to go along with single payer and raising taxes, how can he convince Republicans?
Bernie's entire agenda is a mirage.

To admit "oh yes, it's possible, but we just haven't gotten around to it, because we're too busy
getting lobbied and getting our campaigns funded by big pharma and the drug companies. It just
wouldn't look too good.

(4,915 posts)I don't care who she supports and I have no idea what camp she is in - nor do I personally care. I make my own mind up and vote accordingly.
What I care very deeply about is the years and years that the Democratic Party has borrowed Republican talking points - and refused to STAND UP for things that once were core principles. I still think Biden was right when he said "it's Patriotic to pay taxes". And I still think that the taxes we pay are our commitment to the commons.
The Democrats are always playing defense. Why did they allow "pro choice" and "pro life" to be the way we identify. I have said for years it should always have been "pro choice" and "anti choice" - and finally I hear a few people say it. But to let Republicans co-opt "pro life" when nothing they truly stand for is "pro life" - is crazy.
Same thing with bigger and smaller government. Why just give in and give up. Why not talk about what role government really has and educate people on how government is good. Government programs work well - they help people - they improve our lives. It's a fallacy to believe that government is wasteful. In most cases, government beaurocracies are not as wasteful as many corporations - and much more efficient. Free market capitalism does not work without active government. Most of society's problems stem not from government but from the public sector (like poverty, pollution, healthcare). Freedoms are not restricted by government - we more likely face threats to our civil liberties in the workplace than in government . . . and on and on.
But the Third Way Democrats and the "no labels" crap and all that nonsense about every side does the same thing - have severely hurt our ability to move forward with a progressive agenda. Letting Republicans dictate the language we use is a big problem and we should be educating people about what our taxes do --- and SHOULD DO -- and we, as Democrats, should not be running from the word.

(5,122 posts)So, you can save $5000 a year in insurance premiums if you pay $1.61 per month. That's $83.72 a year to save $5000 in health insurance premiums.
Who is going to say no?
Let's work with the truth here.
Obviously the establishment is so afraid of the voice of the people that they need to lie.

Plus, we should add that Sanders is surging.
Finally, Americans are no longer buying what the establishment is selling.

Do we really need to make fun of Pelosi's appearance? This is irrelevant to the subject and makes us look like misogynist right wingers.

(10,120 posts)As the presidential primaries inch closer and candidates begin to debate the intricacies of their platforms, a long-discussed health policy option has reemerged in debate between democratic candidates; the idea of creating a national health plan in which all Americans would get their insurance through an expanded, universal form of health insurance called Medicare-for-all. When asked their opinion, nearly 6 in 10 Americans (58 percent) say they favor the idea of Medicare-for-all, including 34 percent who say they strongly favor it. This is compared to 34 percent who say they oppose it, including 25 percent who strongly oppose it. Opinions vary widely by political party identification, with 8 in 10 Democrats (81 percent) and 6 in 10 independents (60 percent) saying they favor the idea, while 63 percent of Republicans say they oppose it.
....
At the same time, few Democrats say the issue will be the driving force behind their vote: just 5 percent of Democrats say that it will be the single most important factor in their presidential vote. A third of Democrats (34%) say it will be very important, but not the most important factor, while others say it will be one of many factors they will consider (36%) or that it wont matter at all (5%). Future polls may explore the issue in greater depth.
Nancy, it's what 81% of your party prefers and what 58% of your country prefers.
