2016 Postmortem

Yup, this OpEd says it all.
We saw it in the 2008 election cycle against Obama and we're seeing again this year against Bernie.
http://america.aljazeera.com/opinions/2016/1/hillary-clinton-campaign-bully.html#
It is possible neither Clinton nor her senior advisers, aside from Penn, knew of or condoned these dirty tactics. But she certainly has a high tolerance for slimy operatives who specialize in sewing doubt and fear. During this years campaign, she has accused her top rival, Bernie Sanders, of wanting to tear up the Affordable Care Act and dispatched her daughter to frighten voters with the specter of a Sanders health care plan that would strip low-income people of Medicaid. Both claims are patently false. He favors a single-payer health care system that would extend coverage to all Americans, not take it away. Clinton knows this, and it is disingenuous to say otherwise.
Now her campaign is telling voters that Sanders would lose in the general election and damage the prospects of Democrats in congressional and gubernatorial races around the country because America hates socialists. There is nothing to support this claim. Nearly all polls to date indicate that Sanders would do better than Clinton in the general election if his opponent is Donald Trump, and recent polls indicate that he would outperform her against Sen. Ted Cruz as well. She is too young to have many memories of Sen. Joseph McCarthy, but she is surely conversant with his legacy. Evidently she hears no ugly echoes in comments like this gem from Clinton ally and Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon: Here in the heartland, we like our politicians in the mainstream, and [Sanders] is not. Hes a socialist.
Never mind that Sanders describes himself as a democratic socialist and his views place him squarely in the mainstream. If Clinton is as eager as she claims to attract millennials to her campaign, she might want to consider the fact that 18-to-29-year-olds have a more favorable view of socialism than of capitalism. She can trot out as many TV showrunners and 23-year-old Disney escapees as she can scare up, but its not going to help her much. Lena Dunhams millennial-bait interview with Clinton revealed little about the candidates convictions, aside from an affirmation that Clinton is a feminist who believes student loans should have lower interest rates. (Sanders thinks college should be free.) Even young people care more about policy positions than pop stars.
The Clinton campaign hit a new low in 2016 when Clinton ally and confirmed liar David Brock told The Associated Press that Sanders latest ad makes it seem as if black lives dont matter much to Bernie Sanders. Its not surprising that Brock who is best known for, back in his archconservative days, viciously smearing Anita Hill during the 1991 Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings doesnt know the difference between advocacy and pandering. But lets pretend for a moment that counting the number of black faces in a political ad is a fair and reasonable way of assessing a candidates commitment to defending black lives.

(20,709 posts)Well, if you ignore the fact that a Gallup poll found that only 47% would consider it, even if they otherwise thought the candidate was well qualified. And then there's the fact that nobody describing them as a socialist, or with politics as far left as Bernies, has won any significant election outside a few blue states since... umm, has that ever happened?

There's little to no building on the ACA...
That's not in dispute

(90,335 posts)... Sanders current plan is going to operate side by side with it.
People who've looked at Sanders plan know the employees aren't going to pay the ACA cost or penalty AND.... and pay the 2.2% increase in payroll taxes.
its either or

(12,655 posts)where it goes remains to be seen, but an evolution towards medicare for all is something all progressives should get behind, imo

(26,549 posts)Medical costs are not rising as fast anymore, but they are still rising faster than inflation, and WAAAAAAY faster than wages.
Yet the subsidies in the ACA are tied to poverty level, not cost of insurance.
That means we are going to relatively quickly reach a point where people well outside the subsidy range can not afford insurance.
This can not be fixed by private insurance. Every private insurer bases their payouts on Medicare + X%.
We need to be pushing single payer because our options are single payer, or the collapse of the ACA. It is not possible to tweak the ACA to stop this. There are plenty of ways to use the ACA to get to single-payer, but single-payer is where we have to be headed.

(81,855 posts)From fraudulent flyers to infiltrating unions. This article from establishment media is a deflection.
Infiltrating unions? How exactly is that done? I'm quite curious. You say Sanders campaign is negative but never mind the fact that Hillary is far more low blowing than Bernie has been. I cited you the examples in the article above.
Pointing out Hillary's questionable stances & record is fair game. Speaking fees. Gay marriage. Iraq. On and on.

(81,855 posts)Reports surfaced Thursday alleging that campaign employees of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) had posed as hotel workers on the Las Vegas Strip in order to preach to members of the Culinary Union one of the biggest and most politically influential unions in the key early caucus state.
The Culinary Union confirmed the reports, telling ThinkProgress in a statement that the campaigns actions left them disappointed and offended.
Its completely inappropriate for any campaign to attempt to mislead Culinary Union members, especially at their place of work, said the unions Secretary-Treasurer Geoconda Arguello-Kline. We strongly condemn anyone falsifying their affiliation with the Culinary Union in order to gain access to properties and we will cooperate with casinos and hotels so that this matter is fully resolved.
Sanders campaign workers visited four unionized hotels, The Rio, Paris, The Mirage and Planet Hollywood, and by wearing the unions iconic yellow button, accessed employee dining rooms to speak with and give Sanders literature to workers.

They weren't disappointed over people playing dress up.

(5,761 posts)As the screen cap said, people were wearing culinary buttons and had Bernie paraphernalia. I don't call that infiltrating. Infiltrating is the video of Romney's 47% comment.

(28,941 posts)Still waiting for any evidence that the Sanders' campaign was responsible. Hell, still waiting for any evidence that "flyer" was anything more than a photoshop. However, you're probably right; it was a fraud or as we political junkies like to call it "ratfucking".
