Related: About this forumYoung voters embrace Sanders, but not democracy
When it comes to democracy, the kids arent alright.
Research recently presented by Roberto Foa and Yascha Mounk shows growing disillusionment with democracy not just with politics or campaigns, but with democracy itself.
This growth is worldwide, but it is especially strong among young Americans. Fewer than 30 percent of Americans born since 1980 say that living in a democracy is essential. For those born since 1970, more than one in five describe our democratic system as bad or very bad. Thats almost twice is the rate for people born between 1950 and 1970.
I have written on democracy and democratic politics for decades, and I have been watching these trends over much of that time. In 2008, people like me breathed a sigh of relief as young people came out in droves to vote. It was great to see them participating in our political system.

When 100% of the people can vote, and their representatives listen, then Rep Democracy exists.

(44,765 posts)1. Maybe the democracy the young voters don't embrace is this democracy that has been purchased
by the highest bidders. This current form of democracy kind of sucks, can't say as how I blame them.

... things will never change.

.
Until that time, we are in a SHAM Representative Democracy.
Use the right term too, because a true 'Direct Democracy' is subject to volatility, whims and faction.

those people are all playing with their cell phones instead of connecting in a real way with the famous person in their midst.

something to the group there?
