Going negative in the primaries usually backfires, because it's assumed everyone should be friends.

The discussion ought to stick to qualifications and policy differences, since most voters view everyone favorably. If and when one candidate suddenly lets loose and goes negative (even through "surrogates&quot , primary voters usually see right through it as so much BS. If they could speak collectively, the voters might even tell that candidate to "cut it out."
