2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWhy I知 going to Iowa.
I dont know where Ill be sleeping tomorrow night. I dont know who Ill be with. Hell, Im not sure what town Ill be in, but I know Im going to Iowa. A guy Ive never met is stopping in my town tomorrow morning and picking up me and a woman and were going to Iowa to canvass for Bernie, or whatever else they tell us to do.
To engage in such a cockamamie scheme, I must be the sort who believes in unicorns. At least that is what Im told by more than one supporter of another candidate. You may have heard of her. She used to be inevitable.
Anyway, unicorns are real. Because right now unicorns are defined as health care for everybody, a living wage and free tuition to public colleges. I know the public college and living wage unicorns are real because I am old enough to remember them right here in the USA. When I went to college, Pell grants would cover your tuition and books. And it used to be that one person working for minimum wage could support a family. That was back when Eisenhower and Kennedy used to tax the rich and herd unicorns.
But what about universal health care? That is a unicorn that currently exists everywhere in the industrialized world except the USA. That is why Im going to Iowa, to persuade that unicorn that it can live in the USA, just like it lives everywhere else in the world.
Im also going in order to give the finger to billionaires like Trump and the Kochs and that professional liar and amateur scum sucker David Brock. But mainly its about love for my kids, my wife, me, my friends, humanity and this continent called Turtle Island where my family has dwelt for seven generations. So its mainly about love and, of course, the unicorns. So my dodgy knee, my herniated belly (no health care!) and my backpack are all making the trip.
I think the message for this weekend is that if we turn away from the corporate controlled media, the racism, Wall Street greed and ignorance and turn toward love and knowledge and we stand together, we can do anything. Even persuade unicorns to come back to America. Thats why Im going to Iowa.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes!

(1,400 posts)The health care unicorn is an inevitability.
Too may folks are getting sick of burying loved ones because they couldn't pay, and pay, and keep paying to stay alive.

(2,510 posts)THANK YOU for doing it this time for Bernie! You're working for ALL of us!
I made the trip in 1988 and spent the weekend before the caucuses canvassing in Davenport.
It was a good time, but it would have been much better to have been with a winner...

(22,271 posts)to go canvass in Iowa started about 3 weeks ago. Due to work demands I wasn't able to go. Now, I'm following what all of the out-of-staters are doing in Iowa and it's TORTURE! Canvassing is my absolute favorite type of campaigning. So, AL, please, don't forget to post on DU about what you've experienced because those of us who are in agony because we couldn't be there need to live vicariously through all the volunteers who are there.

(12,769 posts)Never before have I seen so many people willing to give up weekends and vacation days to join people they don't know and travel to other states an spend the night in a unknown place in order to make sure everyone knows who Bernie is and where he stands on the issues. The number, enthusiasm and dedication of these volunteers is amazing.
Thank you for being one of them!

(2,125 posts)But we in it shall be remembered-
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition;
And gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day
Thanks, Admiral and fellow BernieBro!

(2,760 posts)What a wonderful message. I love unicorns and even had one once that lived in the garden behind my apartment in San Francisco some fifty years ago. I don't remember whether it was an affordable collage or living wage unicorn. Getting old I guess.
GO BERNIE!
