Let's be clear: Food stamps, welfare, SS & all those programs saved us from ruin...
Without 'em, in the wake of the last Great Recession, we would've been decimated as a country. That safety net caught a lot of Americans who tumbled down the economic ladder because of the recession. Had they not been in place, had we not had food stamps and unemployment benefits and welfare and other social safety nets, those Americans would have tumbled into absolute despair - a bottomless pit of nothing.
These people are caught up in the damning economic realities of Republican ideology and now the Republicans, who are fully to blame for the conditions we see today, want to take away their only way back up. If Republicans had their way, after the Great Recession, millions of Americans would've lost everything ... and I mean everything. What impact would that have had on the economy? How damaged would our economy be without food stamps and unemployment benefits and other social programs that, for a good portion of our country, were the difference between just getting by and living on the streets?
Let's get real. Social programs staved off a far worse economic depression because it allowed many Americans a hand up ... not a handout. If Romney had won in '08 and gutted those programs, as he wants to do now, the economy today would be far worse, unemployment far higher and Americans worse off because of it.
