The Republicans'/Mitt Romney's problem with Mitt Romney/the Republicans is

that the majority of "sane" Republicans voted in the primaries NOT to follow the batshi*-insane choices of their party.

I think that the problem they face is that most "normal" Republicans did NOT want psychopaths as their national candidate, and the psychopaths just couldn't convince them to vote for them.

Thus, you get the Republican candidate that nobody likes, because the NON-INSANE Republicans didn't want to be associated with the idiots which would alienate the "rational independent" voters.

That is so very true. And then the "moderate" choice of the majority is required to become a crazed caricature of the extreme right. Hey, at least they have a plan.

As long as they keep catering to the Tea Party, the less reasonable the Republican Party appears and the less people like them in general. The Tea Party is the fringe, not an accurate representation of a majority of even the Republican electorate let alone the general electorate. While Mitt Romney may be his own problem for himself no matter what, I have a feeling that he might be doing better in the polls right now if he were running as "Massachusetts moderate Mitt" rather than "severe conservative Mitt".
