Pro-Sanders super PAC brought in $2.3 million

Bernie Sanders rails against super PACs, but the main super PAC supporting his presidential campaign had its biggest off-year fundraising haul ever, bringing in $2.3 million last year, according to a report filed Sunday morning with the Federal Election Commission.

The super PAC, National Nurses United for Patient Protection, is affiliated with the nation’s largest union of registered nurses, National Nurses United, and its members have been a near-constant presence at Sanders’ rallies.

National Nurses United for Patient Protection, spent $1.3 million in the second half of the year, including donations totaling nearly $400,000 to a pair of other unlimited-spending groups supporting Sanders ― the California-based Progressive Kick received $245,000 and the Chicago-based Reclaim Chicago got $150,000. Most of the direct spending by National Nurses United for Patient Protection went towards ads, rallies and other voter outreach associated with a bus tour supporting Sanders, according to the report.

Sanders this month thanked the union’s members “for their support in my campaign” and called National Nurses United “one of the sponsors of my campaign and I appreciate that.”

Those damn nurses. Using all their billionaire pocketbooks to buy a candidate. As the article itself has said:

But, according to the super PAC’s FEC filing, almost all of the PAC’s cash flow came in the second half of last year ― and every dime of it came from the union itself. The union did not respond immediately to an email seeking information about its super PAC finances, but the money likely came from dues that members paid to be a part of the union, which come in much smaller increments than the seven-figure checks that fill the coffers of the super PACs that Sanders derides on the campaign trail as eroding American democracy.

National Nurses United For Patient Protection was formed in 2009 - long before Sanders became a candidate. Basically the nurses union is using their money to endorse Sanders. They didn't become an organization simply to support a candidate with unlimited amounts of money without disclosing where it comes from. It's quite apparent where their money comes from and they disclose all of it.

As Sanders himself has said:

"While I will not accept PAC money from corporate America, I gladly accept PAC contributions from organizations fighting to improve life for ordinary people. Over the years, my campaigns have received strong financial support from PACs associated with organized labor, the environment, women, senior citizens, human rights, and the needs of children. That is continuing in this campaign.
The general ignorance surrounding the issue of campaign financing is frustrating. My opponents call me a "hypocrite" for accepting PAC money. How can I accept PAC money, they say, and then claim that I am fighting against "special interests"? Isn't a PAC, by definition, a "special interest"? Aren't all PAC contributions the same? Does it make any difference who the PAC represents?
Such questions, which are repeated ad nauseam in the media, reflect a lack of understanding of the role of money in politics. So, let me be very clear about this. I do not believe that working people are a special interest. I do not believe that hungry kids are a special interest. I do not believe that fighting for the right of women to control their own bodies is a special interest. I do not believe that protecting the environment is a special interest."

A super PAC aiding Democrat Hillary Clinton added $25 million to its coffers during the last six months of 2015 and has attracted $10 million more since the start of this year to boost Clinton's presidential ambitions.

In all, Priorities USA Action says it has taken in more than $50.5 million since Jan. 1, 2015
