Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX): Missouri Senate 'not a winnable race'

9/28/12 10:44 AM EDT

While the National Republican Senatorial Committee issued a statement this week expressing support for Missouri Rep. Todd Akin's Senate campaign, NRSC Chairman John Cornyn sends a sharply opposing signal via the Lexington Courier-Journal:

Texas Sen. John Cornyn, the chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, said on Thursday that he does not intend to put money into the race of controversial Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin.

“We have no plans to do so,” Cornyn told The Courier-Journal in an interview just a short time ago.

“I just think that this is not a winnable race,” he said. “We have to make tough calculations based on limited resources and where to allocate it, where it will have the best likelihood of electing a Republican senator.”

... might be to trick some of us into thinking that Missouri is in the bag, when probably a more true assessment is that there are enough whackos in Missouri to elect Akin unless the Democrats really turn out to vote. Another subtle "voter suppression" technique by Cornyn? Just speculating...

Akin is toast. McCaskill will coast to victory. Akin couldn't win if the party poured all their resources into supporting him.Cornyn is just stating the rather obvious truth.

She has the edge, but I don't think she wants people getting complacent.

In order to win, she still needs the majority of women in Missouri to vote for her since the majority of men will still support Akin.

And let's not forget that while Cornyn may not be spending any resources there, De Mint, Gingrich & Santorum are all helping him out. Why are they doing that if they don't think it's winnable?

The only thing he is capable of is depositing donor and lobbyist checks and convincing rural yahoos that he cares about them and his plumbing works.
