Mitt Romney campaign co-chair and former New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu accused President Obama of waiting too long to order the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, in an interview with the New York Times that was published on Saturday.
Sununu said that Obama was timid, could have gone after the terrorist mastermind sooner, and attributed the successful operation to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton:
The president is trying to take credit for following the strategy and the tactics put into place by George W. Bush. At some point the president is going to have to explain why he was timid on the first two or three opportunities that we had. Thank goodness Hillary Clinton was there was to convince him to do the right thing. [...] His trying to take credit for having been decisive belies the fact that he wasnt decisive until pressed by others.
But former Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who served in both the Bush and Obama administrations, described Obamas decision to order the raid that killed Osama bin Laden gutsy, saying that people dont realize what a tough call it was and not everyone would have made the same call. Vice President Biden and Gates both advised Obama against taking the course he chose on the bin Laden raid, noting that There wasnt any direct evidence that he was there. It was all circumstantial.
Indeed, even Romney had hinted that he would have not followed in Obamas footsteps. In April of 2007, Romney said, Its not worth moving heaven and earth spending billions of dollars just trying to catch one person, but quickly changed his mind after bin Laden was killed. Any thinking American would have ordered exactly the same thing, he proclaimed earlier this year.

(3,596 posts)First they attacked Clinton because he would have gotten him during his second term and possibly avoided the 9-11 attacks.
Then they molly-coddled Bush/Cheney when they basically gave up looking for OBL even though Bush (mr tough guy) said he wanted him dead or alive. Bush even made fun of the search for OBL.
Obama committed the right intelligence resources to closing the noose on OBL and took a very brave move to initiate the raid. So much could have gone wrong - Pakistani military attacking our forces in the compound, OBL not being there, etc. As it was we lost a special helicopter that had to be destroyed to avoid having our enemies reverse engineer some of the special stealth and sound-limiting technology onboard.
Sununu is just mad because Bushie didn't get OBL and Obama did. Obama has killed more of the top AQ leadership in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Yemen in his first term than Bush/Cheney did in 8 years.

(24,392 posts)I've never seen Republicans express so much admiration for Hillary Clinton as I have since Barack Obama became POTUS.
They don't realize, however, that neither President Obama nor Hillary (nor are Democrats) going to "take the bait". Saying that President Obama did what he did only because of Hillary is almost as absurd as suggesting that Seals essentially "went rogue" and took it upon themselves to take down Bin Laden.
