is what happened in 1984. They declared Reagan the winner a little after 7:00, which of course was 4:00 on the west coast. Very reliable evidence that several Congressional races were flipped because more than half the country in large part stopped voting. So all media agreed not to call a race before polls close.
But, by the time the polls close the results are pretty much known. I was hearing from Dem HQ in SC that Clinton would get over 80% early Saturday afternoon, even though the last polls weren't anywhere near that.

In our last election they called the race before the polls closed in all of our counties. I called them on the phone and complained. I'm sure I'm not the only one because they removed the info from their scroll until the polls closed in the rest of the state. Asshats.

...I like it better when they at least confirm that the votes are following the exit polling.
