My Northern CO caucus restored my faith a bit last night...a very nice cross section of Dems who
seemingly see the big picture... Lots of young people, but a true cross section in age and gender and, I believe, SES status for the community. Not enough ethnic/racial diversity, but I think Denver's findings would be expected to be more representative on that score than Northern Colorado.. We were told that this was a record year for caucus attendance--far more than even 2008 for Obama v Clnton! Considering how far away from the site I had to park, I am inclined to agree
At my caucus and particularly among my precinct there was a split--as expected-- with a pretty significant majority going for Senator Sanders. But what was refreshing to me (beyond having the freedom to talk politics with neighbors whose political identity as Dems was previously unknown), was that both those who strongly supported Secretary Hillary Clinton and those who were likewise passionate for Senator Bernie Sanders, were cordial to each other and very polite--even at times complementary--of the other candidate as they attempted to convince the relative few "undecideds".
It was clear that all there, no matter how strong their support for their own candidate, saw the big picture. The unity became clear when the subject of the Republicans (and specifically Trump) came up. At least as far as I heard, there was no talk of NOT voting for whichever Dem becomes the candidate. Yes, there was passion. But, there was none of the discord and rancor that has permeated DU the past 18 months or longer.
I only hope that this might signal the future, no matter which Dem is nominated. We can not survive the damage of the Republicans taking the WH. We simply can not allow that to happen....
