7. "Bernie Sanders, the refreshing choice"

Authenticity and consistency are so rare in politics these days — no wonder a strong number of voters are supporting U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders’ bid to become the Democratic candidate for president. Sanders’ signature candor is a refreshing change from status quo politics. Many Americans share his frustration over the fact that more and more power is being concentrated today in the hands of a few.

He is the only candidate in this race, on either side of the aisle, who has spoken forcefully — and over years — against Wall Street’s willingness to take enormous risks while expecting public bailouts.

Sanders advocates for breaking up big banks now and bringing back a new version of the repealed Glass-Steagall Act that would prevent financial institutions from spending customers’ money so recklessly in the future.

Sanders bravely calls out the role of big money in politics and supports a repeal of the U.S. Supreme Court’s disastrous Citizens United decision. He has long warned about the dangers of media consolidation, which limits the range of information citizens need to maintain a strong democracy.

The Seattle Times historically only endorses candidates who promise to repeal the estate tax. I don't recall Sanders ever doing that.

(as some posters above have expressed). But I do think the endorsement is important for this reason: They would not likely have made the endorsement if they hadn't done their own polling in Washington and found big Sanders support among their readers. And THAT means that old-school Democrats, and also many Independents (and maybe some old-school Republicans), who don't get their news from John Stewart, reddit or Twitter, but actually read a newspaper, are supporting Sanders, at least in the state of Washington.

It isn't just the young and the tech savvy, and it isn't just Leftists and real Progressives, it's...well, virtually everybody.

I drive around Bellevue (conservative well to do suburb of Seattle), go shopping for clients at Whole Foods and have seen loads of Bernie sticker but only 1---one--- hillary bumber sticker.

Surprised at this very conservative paper but very proud they did it. Washington state will go for Bernie in a big way.

I'm going to say this is nice, but probably not yooooojly consequential. I don't think newspaper endorsements matter much anymore, regardless of the candidate. There are exceptions (in immigrant communities, for instance, or maybe even baby boomers who grew up with media endorsements as kind of a big deal), but outside of that it's just a nice notch on your belt and probably not a lot more.

... but SUPER DELEGATES matter more!

It seems pretty obvious from where I sit here in Seattle that WA is going to go BIG for Bernie in a few weeks, and yet, and yet ... our beloved Super delegates all seem to be willing to thwart the will of their constituents, and give their votes to Hillary anyway. I hope all good WA progressives start contacting their Reps NOW, and urge them to honor the will of WA Democrats. The sad fact that their super delegate commitments are being touted as proof that Hillary is so far ahead (in hopes of discouraging a wasted vote for Sanders) is downright shameful.

The Times endorsement was indeed surprising and wonderful ... and yet they continue to use NY Times (biased) articles when covering the race. In today's endorsement edition they do so again, and once again in that article they list the delegate count as 1000 something (Hillary) to roughly 400 (Bernie). In reality, Bernie is behind by less than 200 committed delegates right now (with favorable states yet to come).

So everyone ... call, e-mail, write your Reps and let them know how you feel. At a minimum, they should be neutral at this time in their delegate commitments. Instead, their endorsements are being used in the narrative against Bernie.
