2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWhen will Bernie release the transcripts from his 1988 Soviet Union 'honeymoon?'
I know, we're not supposed to call it a honeymoon, even though his wife went on the trip with him and it began the day after they got married. So go ahead and call it whatever you want.
Did he give any speeches during this non-honeymoon trip? If so, when will he release the transcripts?

It's no different than when I took my wife on a business trip. The hotel room was already paid for.
We picked up her air fare and her expenses. My expenses, that were business related, were put on the expense voucher.
Man, this really is a red bait post. Deny all you want, but it's quite pathetic.

(11,955 posts)But yeah, there are lots of reason one might think Bernie would have a better chance than Hillary against the Republicans in November, and you can find plenty of threads on that. Unfortunately, we're likely to nominate the candidate with the lesser chance of success in the general. The good news is, she is still likely strong enough to win.

(23,720 posts)Well if you really want to know about his trip- you might like to read his book on it: "Outsider in the House"
The following excerpt is from the article I linked to, not his book.
At a news conference that he and European socialists held in Managua the day of the celebration, Sanders repeated his criticism: "The real issue is a very simple one. Does the government of the United States of America have the unilateral right to destroy the government of Nicaragua because the president of the United States and some members of Congress disagree with the Sandinistas?"
During his visit, largely financed by the Sandinista government Sanders paid his airfare Sanders met with President Ortega and other officials. He sat down with the editor of an opposition newspaper, who complained of government censorship. And he walked through Managua's slums, occasionally asking residents about the impact of the 1979 revolution on their lives.
When he returned to Burlington, a group of reporters came to the airport to meet Sanders, who summed up his impressions. "These are people who suffered for 45 years under a terrible dictatorship," he said, "and they're fighting back, and they're trying to build a society where people can live decently." He spoke of "intelligent" Sandinista leaders who had been tortured by the previous regime, and of efforts to build hospitals and schools.

(59,475 posts)The fact is that many on DU and Daily Kos wondered why he didn't emphasize his successful investigations on the gun running and drug running by people supporting the Contras and his investigations of BCCI.
It is interesting to me that on a Democratic message board it is consider a problem that Bernie was against the right wing thugs -- that the US including many Democrats (including the Clintons) thought the US should support - against the duely elected government.
It used to be that Democrats though the "bad" side were the Contras - with THEIR death squads that even killed Jesuit priests. Not to mention, bringing cocaine into the country to illegally fund them was horrible in the inner cities and especially with POC.
If you followed the Paris Climate Change talks - the deal nearly fell apart -- and one final problem was that the delegate from Nicaragua wanted to make changes that the US could not accept because it would mean a vote was needed by the Senate. Ortega, who is AGAIN the head of state called the delegation to stand down after calls from John Kerry and Raul Castro. One wonders if Kerry's brave actions in the 1980s might have helped.
You might notice that there were Republicans speaking against intervention - likely because regime change is not really popular at the moment.

(23,720 posts)You see, Bernie and Jane Sanders (under the pretense of a honeymoon)- went there to meet with those two well known nefarious spies Boris Badenov and Natasha Fatale. The Plan was to win the Presidency within the next couple of years (along with stealing the secret rocket fuel formula) and then hand the US over to Fearless Leader and Mr. Big.
Unfortunately Rocky The Flying Squirrel and Bullwinkle The Moose thwarted the world's greatest no-goodnik's attempts at making the deal and finally getting rid of moose and squirrel once and for all- after Boris sent in his lady spy with a package which was really bomb. Door got locked, she couldn't get out, who got blown up? Boris.
It is only now- that finally Bernie and Boris' have another chance to follow through with their devious plot to steal the secret rocket fuel formula and turn the US over to those evil Red Ruskies.
Let's hope Natasha doesn't screw it up again.
For those unable to discern- this is fiction

Bush also raised questions about Clintons student trip to the Soviet Union. The liberal media didnt like that. Denver Post columnist Ed Quillen wrote, Bush hints that when Bill Clinton visited the Soviet Union on a student tour, Clinton may have met with KGB officers. Bush implies that something sinister was arranged. What was it?? The KGB sent a brainwashed Bill Clinton back to become governor of Arkansas. Quillen said that was preposterous.
It may not be so outlandish. Speaking at an Accuracy in Media luncheon in Washington, D.C., Ivian C. Smith, the former FBI special Agent-in-Charge in Arkansas, voluntarily brought up the issue of Bill Clintons tour of the old Soviet Union. Thats never been satisfactorily explained, he said. Smith said that while Clinton was never formally branded a security risk by top officials in the bureau, many believed that he had never fully explained his travel to the Soviet Union. As President, Clinton expressed concern during his affair with Monica Lewinsky that a foreign government was tapping his phones.
Smith said books about Clinton, such as First in His Class by David Maraniss, never explained it either. Smith added, I can tell you back in those days, though, that there would have been close scrutiny by someone because students didnt just wander in and out of there. I suspect theres a reference to Bill Clinton somewhere in some kind of archive back in Moscow? >From the perspective of an FBI counterintelligence agent, Smith said, We would have liked to have a more complete answer to what happened during those weeks there.

(1,421 posts)Nothing new for Bernie supporters to bat away another misleading piece of misinformation.
On MSNBC in May, 2015:
19. Sanders honeymooned in the USSR. Sanders married his current wife, Jane, in May of 1988 and the next day left for their romantic honeymoon to Yaroslavl, in the then-Soviet Union. The trip was an official delegation from Burlington to cement the two cities sister-city relationship. Trust me. It was a very strange honeymoon, Sanders writes.
Trust me. It was a very strange honeymoon.
He also visited Cuba with Jane in 1989 and tried to meet with Fidel Castro, but it didnt work out and he met with the mayor of Havana and other officials instead.
Sanders is proud of Burlingtons international diplomacy efforts. Burlington had a foreign policy because, as progressives, we understood that we all live in one world, he writes.
He had the flag representing the Russian sister city to Burlington in his mayoral office.

(39,451 posts)He later wrote in his 1997 book Outsider in the House that he went there as part of a 12-person delegation from Burlington to establish good relations with Yaroslavl.
"Burlington had a foreign policy, because, as progressives, we understood that we all live in one world, he wrote.
The timing of the trip was unusual: Sanders and his wife only got married the day before the delegation left.
"Trust me, it was a very strange honeymoon, he wrote in his book.
