Thank you Hillary for the apology. It takes courage to do this.
I hope we can put this to rest. People make mistakes--we all do.

(27,985 posts)I'm shocked and embarrassed that she wasn't keenly aware of that. However, I'm glad she apologized without making excuses.

(45,319 posts)counter her 'error'. To make no excuses would require her admitting it was very insulting and highly inaccurate and taking the time to tell American the facts about Ron and Nancy and that shameful history. As it stands her apology was not an apology nor an explanation nor a correction, it was just an excuse and dismissal of the issue.
But thanks for not trying to down play the Reagan era.
I'd like to mention here that basically the only straight people who were joining the early AIDS demonstrations were Pro Choice women. There was a reason they did so.

(115,267 posts)is how on God's green earth she could have made such a YUUGE, off-the-charts false statement in the first place? Here's what she said:
When did completely ignoring an enormous public health problem become "low-key advocacy"? It's hard to get any more "low-key" than that. Nancy Reagan even refused to help her old friend Rock Hudson when he was dying of the disease. "Low-key advocacy," my fat pink ass. If some young staffer who didn't remember the '80s had come up with this canard as a written statement it might be understandable (and easier to disavow), but those words came out of Hillary's own mouth. Did she even read a newspaper between 1980 and 1988?

(5,946 posts)a lot of that seems to be going around today, if it was an off the cuff remark it is different.
the thing is, I guess my life is not busy enough, but I remember clearer than day the call for Reagans to act and their playing dumb. I am the same age as Clinton but not in as good a shape.

(24,853 posts)It wasn't a mistake, and it wasn't misspeaking. She said exactly what she meant to say. It was a PARAGRAPH for fuck's sake.
It was a miscalculation, and I bet she had NO idea it was a miscalculation until her staffers told her Twitter and other social media sites were melting down.
So excuse me if I call bullshit.

You are right. To people who hate her, nothing she says or do will ever be acceptable. Fortunately for them, their candidate is absolutely perfect in every way so he never makes any mistakes.

(27,677 posts)She just "misspoke," that's all.
She meant to say that the Reagan White House thought AIDS was a "gay plague," a big joke and that Nancy turned her back on Rock Hudson when he reached out for help.
It just came out as And because of both President and Mrs. Reagan in particular, Mrs. Reagan we started a national conversation, when before nobody would talk about it."
A misstatement like that can happen to anyone.

(3,411 posts)Nancy Reagan was the epitome of how the right likes their women:
vacuous and submissive - forever in service to a man. I'll give Nancy respect for her devotion to her husband (caring for someone with Alzheimer's is not an easy or pleasant thing to do). She had done some work for Alzheimer's, but that's not being a decent person, that's following her selfish interests. She had no interest in stem cell research until it affect her personally.
That woman caused a lot of suffering to those with AIDS, and for entire families with her war on drugs, so I can't conjure up heartfelt sympathies for someone who cared little about anyone else.
Nancy Reagan was America's Imelda Marcos .... from her $400,000 china services (remember that one? while they were cutting school lunches and categorizing relish and ketchup as vegetables?), 10's of thousands on wardrobes she demanded to be given for free - just because of who she was?, pushing the Carters to get out of the WH 3 months early so she could get her free redecorating done before they moved in?, it goes on and on. I was an adult at that time. I remember it all. She was not some sweet old lady with a love story for the ages. Yes, she produced 2 remarkable children. They turned out that way in spite of their parents - not because of them. Her daughter at 24, fearful of passing on her parents genes, she says, underwent a tubal ligation. Patti wrote a book detailing the mental and physical abuse she grew up with.
Her vapid "Just say no" campaign was a public relations smokescreen for Reagan SLASHING drug abuse treatment, drug abuse research and drug education funding in his savage-to-the-poor early budgets.
When she helped cover up his mental health issues, she damaged the republic. Covering up her husband's dementia (during his !st term in office!) while he emptied the mental institutions and overnight created the beginnings of the homelessness epidemic. That he and she refused to say AIDS, joked about AIDS - let alone make an effort to take care of the afflicted, while he and Oliver North were allowing the Iran Contra to sell drugs in our country to fund their war.
In a picture-taking session at the Reagan ranch in California earlier this month, Mr. Reagan was asked a question about American-Soviet talks on space weapons. When he hesitated, Mrs. Reagan could be heard saying, ''Tell them we are doing everything we can.''
In short: Bette Davis
"You should only speak good of the dead."
"Joan Crawford is dead."
"Good."

(53,823 posts)I am offended by what she claimed and rolling my eyes at her "apology", which was anything but courageous. While I agree some are making this out to be more than what it is, I also don't like those acting as if this wasn't an insult; it was. If this had been off the top of her head, I might have been a little more forgiving.
I will also say, I am just as disgusted with those who are using this to attack gay people! Clinton didn't call us "fags and dykes" and while I too am offended by her "misspeak" ( ), there is NO FUCKING REASON to attack GLBT people and those with HIV/AIDS who still support Clinton! They do not have "Stockholm's Syndrome", they are not "sell outs", "Log Cabin Republican lite", nor are they "bad" GLBT people! JUST STOP IT! If you are so damn offended by how this is an "attack" on the GLBT community, how are you making it any better by attacking gay people?! BACK OFF! This especially applies to those who are NOT GBLT!
