It was basically free. No one considered it evil. I sure didn't!

(7,830 posts)That's just wrong.
It shouldn't be a pipe dream or "radical" to return to sanity in this country, with our priorities straight.
We had more govt funds back then, though, because we weren't spending TRILLIONS in defense & wars for corporate profit.
(I went to a state college too. Univ of TX, Austin. I guess in this respect I'm lucky to be older than you. )

(41,131 posts)Of five of us, 4 went to public college, 1 to a private college during 1965-1979 in three states. The tuition on average per semester was $200. In summer we took classes or worked jobs. Grad school at a private university in a large city was $500-600 tuition per semester, 1978-1981.
What's been done since Raygun to wreck the higher education system we had, and cause students to become debt slaves all because of reduced revenue from taxes is an abomination and alone in the western, industrialized world. It needs to change back to what it was before. Bernie's absolutely correct.

(2,565 posts)Southwest Texas State, (now Texas State),1984 to 1988 - Each Semester about $360 for 15 hours, $100 dollars for books. Four years cost approximately $4,000. I was able to pay for each years tuition by working part time for 4 dollars an hour during the summer, just about 35 cents an hour over the min wage at the time. Did you catch the 'part time' part? Even had some time for FUN those summers. Well, I just checked Texas State's website tuition rates. I don't know about the book costs, but 15 hours cost $5,000 a semester, which totals to $40,000 for 4 years. Here are some costs factored into that amount. Bus Fee - $90, Athletic Fee $300, Student Success Fee $90 (WTF?), Recreational Sports Fee $94, Computer Service Fee $224, Library Fee $150, Student Center Fee $64.00, Student Service Fee $90.00. Are you freaking kidding me???? This is per semester.- $1,100 for these alone. By the way, that $360 a semester I mentioned, included these types of fees, that wasn't just the 'hour/credit' cost. America - the "Greatest Country in the World" - for sucking the cash outta ya. This is shameful. From 500 a semester to 5,000 a semester is 1000% increase. If min wage increased at the same rate, min wage would be 36.50/hr now.
Most kids took out student financial aid at beginning of semester, and paid it back before next year started. I don't know anyone that got a 4 year degree that had debt when they graduated. My husband went back to school (north Texas University's) to take his last 30 hours in 1995. He took about 2,500 to pay for tuition and books. took him 2 years to finish up and he worked mostly full time for it. We paid it all back within 2 years.

(24,695 posts)Social Security was formulated by a woman by the name of Francis Perkins, who was the labor Secretary in the FDR Administration, she was also one the main individuals that did something after the Triangle waist shirt factory fire in 1911 that killed over 114 people because of greed and that is a simple fact.
And Chris (Tweety), do you pay into social security after the first $118.500.00 yes you do, but when you make $118,500.01 you Chris quit paying into the social security system.
And I do remember when living out in California when we use to be able to have the first two years of Community Collage for , free, then old Ronnie Reagan showed up on the door step, and he was so pissed off at all of protesters he basically got his henchmen on the Board of Regents, because those of us protesting for free speech and against the Vietnam crap, we could go off to die, but we couldn't vote( which was changed in 1970, and they then eliminated that program, and its been like that ever since--------------scum bag right wing racist
And whats Jimmy Dore said is correct..................here the public gets to listen to this man (if they want too) on MSNBC), and his wife is running in Maryland, and she is getting money from Marriott, well guess who has a stake in Marriott, 47% Romney, that's right good old Mittens, the same guy who "moved" an entire company to China for old times sake:

(41,131 posts)Germany became the first nation in the world to adopt an old-age SOCIAL INSURANCE program in 1889, designed by Germany's Chancellor, Otto von Bismarck. The idea was first put forward, at Bismarck's behest, in 1881 by Germany's Emperor, William the First, in a ground-breaking letter to the German Parliament. William wrote: ". . .those who are disabled from work by age and invalidity have a well-grounded claim to care from the state."
Bismarck was motivated to introduce social insurance in Germany both in order to promote the well-being of workers in order to keep the German economy operating at maximum efficiency, and to stave-off calls for more radical socialist alternatives. Despite his impeccable right-wing credentials, Bismarck would be called a socialist for introducing these programs, as would President ROOSEVELT 70 years later. In his own speech to the Reichstag during the 1881 debates, Bismarck would reply: >"Call it socialism or whatever you like. It is the same to me."
The German system provided contributory RETIREMENT BENEFITS and DISABILITY BENEFITS as well. Participation was mandatory and contributions were taken from the employee, the employer and the government. Coupled with the WORKERS' COMPENSATION program established in 1884 and the "SICKNESS" INSURANCE enacted the year before, this gave the Germans a comprehensive system of income security based on social insurance principles. (They would add UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE in 1927, making their system complete.)

(24,695 posts)Thom Hartmann says all the time he has some of smartest listeners on his show, just like DU, Crooks and Liar, Shadowproof, The Young Turks, The Progressive Magazine, The Nation Magazine, Harper's Magazine, Free SpeechTV, PivotV the list goes on and on, we just don't get enough of it on the air, they are in some obscure place out-a-sight and out-a-mind.
This is what is missing, in this country insightful, facts, to be presented instead of corporate shrills looking to make buck, instead of some scroll on the bottom saying MSNBC Analyst or CNN Analyst, or whatever MSM show, its damn near the same, just cut and paste the head on the body, but who are they lobbying for in the back ground.
Again.................. Thank you for the information

Like Bernie says, we must return to having affordable American PUBLIC COLLEGE TUITION that was boosted by President LINCOLN'S 1862 Land Grant College Program and many other efforts, epitomized by the outstanding college system in California that thrived for 100 years before Reagan destroyed it.
- US LAND GRANT COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES, EST. 1862
http://www.nap.edu/read/4980/chapter/2
- WHAT ARE LAND GRANT COLLEGES OF AGRICULTURE?
◾The history of land grant colleges of agriculture is intertwined with the history of higher education for U.S. citizens of average means. The land grant system began in 1862 with a piece of legislation known as the Morrill Act (see box copy, p. 2). This law gave states public lands provided the lands be sold or used for profit and the proceeds used to establish at least one collegehence, land grant collegesthat would teach agriculture and the mechanical arts. Land grants for the establishment of colleges of agriculture and mechanical arts were also later given to U.S. territories and the District of Columbia. The legislative mandate for these land grant colleges helped extend higher education to broad segments of the U.S. population.
◾Public universities existed already in some states; however, most states responded to the Morrill Act by legislating new agricultural and mechanical arts colleges rather than by endowing existing state institutions (Kerr, 1987). The act gave rise to a network of often poorly financed colleges known as the ''1862s'' (Table 1-1; Figure 1-1). The Second Morrill Act, which provided for annual appropriations to each state to support its land grant college, was passed by Congress in 1890.

More importantly, college cost was a mere fraction of what it has become since the 80s.
It was within reach of middle class American families.

(650 posts)When the California University system was established in 1868 the charter stated:
"For the time being, an admission fee and rates of tuition such as the Board of Regents shall deem expedient may be required of each pupil; and as soon as the income of the University shall permit, admission and tuition shall be free to all residents of the state.
The public universities continued to be tuition free for California residents until 1970 when an "educational fee" was added ($150-180 per year). This started a series of increases that has led to residents paying around $16k per year in tuition these days.

(21,046 posts)When the Thom Hartmann Show was on Air America and I had XM radio. He talked about CA having a university system that was the envy of the world when Ronnie stopped funding it because they were out protesting the Vietnam War. Ronnie realized he did not want educated college kids protesting. He wanted a stupid populace thar was easily controlled. Because of the draft, the baby boomers (my generation) were easily the best educated generation in American history. In the 1950s many of our fathers who had fought in World War 2 improved themselves by going to school on the G.. I. Bill. The Republicans were against it of course. My family was brought into the middle class in the 1950s by dad going to night school to become an attorney and the 4 percent V.A. mortgage they got to buy a house in crummy post war suburbia for 9 thousand dollars. The payment was eighty four dollars a month and my folks talked like that was a huge amount of money.

(11,366 posts)Using Federal Election Commission data and Hardball transcripts, The Intercept has identified 48 frequent guests of Matthewss program who have made donations to the Kathleen Matthews for Congress campaign. These individuals, their spouses, or their political action committees donated $79,050 as of December 31, 2015 about 5 percent of the $1.5 million Matthews had raised as of that time.
Some of the guests made the donations after they were on the show in some cases, long after. But in at least 11 of these cases, the Hardball guests appeared on the program after Kathleen Matthews announced her candidacy, and without any disclosure of the donations. And in at least three of those cases, the donations came within days of the MSNBC appearance.
