I'm an Illinois election judge this Tuesday.

This Tuesday, I'll be judging the election here in my precinct of Chicago, which I've been doing for seven years. I will be there from five in the morning to at least eight at night, no breaks, and then I have to drive the results to the designated elementary school. I have to go with a Republican, per the rules, to ensure nobody tampers with the results. Here in Illinois, the standard is paper ballots, but anyone can use the voting machine if they so choose.

This time, the procedures are a little easier. We used to look up voters' names in the tablet and print out a sticker, but the darn printer kept jamming. Now, they've abolished the printer and replaced it with a simple form to fill out. So if any of you live in Illinois, I encourage you to get your butts to the polls and vote, not just for Hillary or Bernie, but for a nominee for Senator to replace Mark Kirk, the presidential electors, judges and local committee members. You have the power.

I've been there as a judge . Long day but usually a good sociology experience except the time I was dealing with some opponent judges who didn't play by the book . Let's just say it fit stereotypes of Chicaga politics....
i think you get a little more for the drop off but still they should pay more for the whole job IMO Its serious work and such a long day.
Thank you for your work at the polls

for election judges/inspectors? What you describe is my experience as well… you work 15+ hours with no breaks and are expected to carefully and with absolute accuracy manage the polling place. In NY it is 5:30am until the canvas is complete (polls close at 9pm) but you have to secure the ballots and record everything precisely for transport to the BOE. At least! 16 hours without a break, try that once!

We need a national holiday and split shifts at polling places… I thought maybe it was just insanity in NYS.

Cheers and good luck.
