2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThis is a MineralMan thread. If such threads
disturb you or disappoint you, this is one of those. I post one or two a day, on average.
I'd like to once again remind people that this primary season will end with the nomination of a Democrat for President. As a lifelong Democrat, I'll be voting in November for that nominee. I guarantee it. I haven't missed an election since 1966. I was in the USAF and my absentee ballot didn't get home in time.
I invite all Democrats to do the same. I invite all DUer's to join me at the polling place to vote for each and every Democrat on the ballot. That's not a loyalty oath I'm asking for. It's an invitation to join me in doing that.
I first got involved in politics in 1960 as a sophomore in High School. I campaigned for JFK for President in my own community. I handed out flyers, knocked on doors, and generally made a nuisance of myself. When I considered who was running against him, I realized that a Democrat would be a better choice for President.
In every ensuing presidential election year, I have done the same thing for the Democratic nominee. As years went by, I learned more about what happens when Republicans are in control of our government, both state and federal. I watched Nixon, Reagan and the Bushes set us back each time they were in office. That increased my resolve to support the Democratic nominee in every election and for every office. I'm still doing that, and will continue as long as I am able.
Every four years, I invite people to go to the polls and vote for Democratic candidates for every office on the ballot, including the President. I'm still handing out flyers and knocking on doors. I don't always agree with everything about those individual candidates, but I retain my belief that we do better with Democrats in office, and worse with Republicans.
So, I'm not asking for anyone's "loyalty oath." I don't need any oaths from anyone. I'm simply inviting people to go to the polls this November and vote for the Democrat. Over 55 years have gone by since I first started inviting people to do that. I'm not going to stop now.
You don't need to tell me how you will vote. That's your decision, and I wouldn't dream of trying to argue with you. I do hope you'll accept my invitation, though, but you needn't RSVP. I'm not throwing a party. I'm supporting the candidates of a party. I find that party much more rewarding than the other one being held that day.
I hope to see you at the polling place in November. I hope you'll come to that party.
Thanks for reading this.

(2,679 posts)Gonna totally date myself. I was born the day before Halloween 1966. My dad was in the USAF at the time. He went on to serve until 1980 when he retired. He never voted during that time but claimed to lean dem. He is no longer that way. He is very red now. Not of the religious flavor red. I bet he is supporting trumpf. We couldn't be more opposite politically.

(146,284 posts)are conservatives, too. We never discuss politics in my family. Everyone decides for him or herself. We have many other things in common, so we focus on those. Life's too short for animosities about politics within a family, I think.

(2,679 posts)Didn't really work out well. He refuses to not only not discuss politics when we talk but also to not demean my party. So I rarely talk to him. He lives in northern Ala. His brother, my uncle, lives in the Tampa area and is also very right leaning but oddly very religious. I say oddly because he is 100% behind trumpf. I'd have pegged him for a cruz supporter. Now my aunt his wife, I believe is supporting Hillary. She is very blue and can't wait til the election is over so she doesn't have to hear about trumpf so much. My uncle is a rabid faux noise viewer. My dad is more of a limp-balls listener. But my uncle will generally avoid politics at family gatherings.

(2,679 posts)Besides, by replying I am kicking up the thread.
But mostly just my dad's side of the family leans right. My mom's side, (they are divorced since the mid 80's) leans way left. She voted Hilary. She is also in FL, the Tampa area, and she early voted. Her side of family is mostly in Texas, some in CA. All of Mexican decent, and 90% blue. And they broke 70-30 in favor of Hillary over Bernie.
My husband who voted absentee, as he right now works in Spain is a dem. I think he voted for Bernie. He was still on the fence between the two. He likes both, and will support who ever wins in the GE. My son, if he votes will vote Bernie but gladly vote Hillary in the GE. My daughter was toying with voting for Bernie, but ended up early voting for Hillary. She is a nurse and not off today so she voted over the weekend. My husband has big family but most of them are dems. Couple of odd ball repugs but we don't talk politics so there is no problems. Most of my husband's dem family members are supporting Hillary, about 70-30. They are of German by way of Wisconsin.
So like I said, it's not has bad as it sounds.

(58,785 posts)That's very nice and says good things about them.
I read that "liberal" to "conservative" - and whatever other personalities are out there - personality orientation correlates more strongly with spouse choice than any other factor, including education and other important social and economic issues. This stuff goes far deeper than just politics, and people gravitate to those who share their feelings about the world, our place in it, morality, etc.
We have some hard-core conservatives in our extended family, and we can be their friends knowing that about them. They're very decent when focused on their own, only shocking when attention turns to what should be done with "outsiders", so we don't talk about that.
Unfortunately, they cannot accept us in turn if we say what we think, so we let them talk and that's it. Last time I saw one I commented on how well Trump was doing, knowing that would please him. He no doubt intuits that I probably don't actually support Trump myself, but we never will discuss why. A delicate line, but it works.

(13,868 posts)My parents voted Republican, although my Dad was always pissed off because we were pretty sure my Mom voted for Kennedy (not because of his politics but because he was a Catholic like her).
They have both passed away, and at a dinner with my wife and three children, two of whom are married, the 7 of us were split right down the middle, but it was 4 for Clinton and 3 for Sanders.
Sister's family is also solid Democratic, so only exception is my older brother. I got to tell him his vote was getting cancelled out again this year, this time by my youngest who is now 18 and voted for the first time.

Should Bernie not win the nomination, I will vote for Hillary. But I will not enjoy it. It will only be to resist the fascist uprising of the right and not to support her.
Good post MineralMan.

(3,825 posts)As a long time DU'er, I've seen your posts often. I've been around since the *selection and I plan on voting for the Democratic Candidate for President, just like our lives depended on it, and in reality they do. I want people to also focus on their local politics. It's not all about national, but very much about state and local. We need to take our states back from the insane clown posse that has become this republican party. I hope that everyone will remember that in November. I look at Louisiana that just elected a Democrat for Governor, and I see hope. Let's keep it rolling. Peace Lee

(13,868 posts)My first vote was for McGovern in 72. Spent the day back in my home district (college students couldn't vote where they went to school) driving people to the polls for the Democratic Party.
Got home around 8 PM after a 14 day to find out the damn race had already been called for Nixon.
And to make things worse, my liberal but somewhat apolitical roommates were getting dressed to go to Republican headquarters. When I asked WTF for, they said "free food and liquor and a lot of drunk girls celebrating the win."
I stayed home and pondered the demise of our great nation. And, looking back, I think the Trump/Cruz/modern GOP was born during those 8 years that Nixon was in office and we are still paying for it.
I know the two sides get heated here, but either of our candidates are a huge step away from the brink that is represented by the GOPers.
I won't see you at the polls in November, but we will be there together as brothers in spirit

Yes, I think having any Democrat would be better than a GOPer.
I voted for Bernie in the primary.

Or are we similar enough in concerns, while still being uniquely different, that we have determined our best path forward is to do this together creating a much larger voice? Ding ding.

(260 posts)Although younger than you and from a different starting place, I think that we've both arrived at a similar conclusion. Although I've been an Independent voter for the last 40 years I haven't voted for a Republican candidate in any election State or Federal in all that time. Except for one election here in Oregon (1986 Dem Governor Neil Goldschmidt) that's always been a good choice. As currently constituted the Republican party (since at least 1980) cannot nominate a Presidential candidate I could ever vote for.
So I know that whichever of the two remaining Democratic contenders wins the nomination (and yes I have a preference) they'll have my vote. I'm reasonably certain that we will remain a blue state come November with only one Republican representing the state in Washington (Greg Walden). I won't see you at the polling booth though, we're all mail voting here in Oregon.
