This is, or should be IMO, a procedural issue about who the members of particular political parties want representing them. I thinks it's nutty that non-members should participate at all. If you're too good for the party that's fine, but if that's the case then you shouldn't play a role in a party decision.

Hopefully the day will come when you have to verbally pledge your life to a party before being allowed to vote

That comes later, during the election. This is about nominating a party representative. This is purely a function of internal party politics and should be kept as such, to my mind.

than it needs to be is one of the reasons people don't vote. If protocol is the only reason she shouldn't vote in a closed primary, then I see no need for protocol

Opinion about everything and talked a mile a minute. One time she got going on politics and she couldn't remember what party she was. She turned to me and asked, "What party is Bill Clinton?" I said cautiously, "He's a Democrat." And she goes, "OK, then I'm a Republican!"

Not quite so funny. They are working on it. It happened to her an another voter. Both registered Dems. Both told they switched their registrations. My daughter has only been a registered Dem.
