2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumNumerous Reports of Crossover Votes (Dem to Rep) To Vote Against Trump
This is totally anecdotal, but I have a number of friends and former colleagues who live in Ohio and have reported on social media that they changed registration in order to vote for Kasich in an effort to take Trump down.
I was astonished by the number of people I know who are doing this. I don't think I would be able to stomach voting for a Republican even as a protest vote.
Most of them are Bernie supporters, which surprised me entirely because I would imagine they would want to ensure Bernie's win in Ohio, but apparently the anti-Trump sentiment must be stronger.
Again, this is anecdotal...so in the bigger picture it could be a small number of crossover votes and I just happen to know several of them...and it could be a larger number of Hillary voters crossing over to vote against Trump rather than Bernie voters, but the ones I know happen to be Bernie voters.
Either way, I wonder what this cross-over phenomenon is going to do to the race on both sides???! I find it fascinating.

(11,605 posts)Bernie needs all the votes he can get. It sounds like they are giving up on him

(8,000 posts)I've been hearing a lot of the same thing. There's been pressure in Ohio to do that.

(5,240 posts)A Bernie Supporter IMHO wants Bernie to win the state and has been told for weeks that Bernie was several points behind.
A person who would otherwise vote for Hillary and believing that she will easily win may apt more to vote against trump.
This could be a good thing for Sanders

"I went to the polls fully intending to feel the Bern, but felt a sudden moral obligation to vote against Trump."

(2,074 posts)In MI Hillary was the big loser in the crossover game, since many of her supporters believed she had it in the bag. Coupled with high youth turnout, independents voting for Bernie, and the fact that MI had actually been difficult to poll due to never having had an actual competitive primary there, that helped deliver MI for Bernie. The dynamics are probably different on OH. More trustworthy polling to begin with, perhaps, but how much more trustworthy is difficult to say. Less certainty about a Hillary win might make Hillary supporters less inclined to cross over, maybe? The numbers being against Bernie might make some of his voters more inclined to cross over, maybe? The threat of Trump might pull voters from both, probably.
But all that is speculative. Difficult to say.
