About 218,000 North Carolinians, roughly five percent of registered voters, do not have an acceptable form of government-issued ID that is now required under state law to cast a ballot.
Early voting offered a glimpse of the problems that will arise on Tuesday during the past ten days of early voting, many college students were blocked from the polls. North Carolinas WRAL reported that 864 people across the state had cast provisional early ballots because they did not have acceptable forms of ID, and four of the five counties with the highest concentrations of provisional ballots from voters without ID were in places with college campuses.
Bob Hall, the executive director of Democracy North Carolina, told ThinkProgress that the voter protection hotline is receiving many calls, disproportionately from young people and students, who are being told they do not have acceptable ID, so they have to go through the maze of filling out forms and provisional ballots. Those ballots run the risk of being challenged and not being counted.

(2,125 posts)They are sadly correct in assuming the provisional ballots will never be counted. Students must not be allowed to vote because they will overwhelmingly vote for Sanders.

(13,412 posts)No Dem has supported these disenfranchising voter IDs. It's shameful and dishonest to suggest Hillary supports them.

I'm for one person, one vote. Pure democracy.
I see that there are a few who like restricted democracy.

(23,933 posts)looks like everyone was able to vote fine except for the people who weren't able to vote because they didn't have the right ID.
right now, it might be working in your preferred candidate's favor, but when November rolls around i think HRC supporters will be hoping as many voters as possible get to cast ballots.

(14,916 posts)you have the brass to blame this on Hillary? No, this disenfranchisement of young voters is NOT ok, and it was aimed at Democrats in general, at every level of government. You only squawk, belatedly, when it may have had an impact on Bernie. Welcome to the party, but why didn't you speak up about this before now?

(23,933 posts)where was i? physically i was in Oregon, where i live and work, far away from NC where this shitty anti-democratic law was enacted, ostensibly through the represented will of the people. like almost everyone else at DU, i deplore these Republican measures and their transparent purpose of voter suppression, and feel helpless to do anything about it. this is hardly the first time i've discussed such matters at DU.
now your turn: where in my post did i "have the brass to blame this on Hillary"? exact quote please. thanks in advance.
just fyi, i'm still neutral on my choice of candidate for the election, but if i were inclined to base such decisions mainly on the behavior of a candidates' supporters, you would have done a lot to help me decide right there.
Tanuki
(14,916 posts)was yours. You are correct and did not deserve the brunt of my reaction. Some others seem to have just awakened this morning and found out that it is a problem and somehow aimed at Sanders, but obviously not you. I live in Tennessee, where our state legislature turned from blue to red a few years ago and we have been fighting hard against this. Disenfranchisement/voter suppression is really a sore point for me. Please forgive my intemperate and misdirected post.

(23,933 posts)i can see that a lot of DUers are on edge lately. thanks for making a stand-up apology despite it all.
i consider this to be one of the trial runs for the new GOP voter suppression techniques, and it's dismaying how well it worked. winning in states with these laws will be an extra challenge for us going forward, until we can win at the state level and set matters right again.

(40,366 posts)are you defending draconian Republican voter suppression?
hill2016
(1,772 posts)it's their responsibility (oh...what a big word) to figure out what are the requirements before voting.
Just like anyone taking up residence in a new state needs to figure out what documents to bring and what are the requirements to change an out-of-state driver license.

(27,310 posts)to disenfranchised voters. They are being deployed in states where Republicans dominate government and thus they are designed to disenfranchise Democratic voters.
Democrats do not write laws like this. In fact, Democrats write laws to make it easier to vote.
These restrictions primarily impact the young and the elderly the most.

(40,366 posts)Rosanell Eaton, a 94-year-old voter, had to recite the Preamble to Constitution to vote in North Carolina in the 1940s. Last year, she had to make 11 trips to state agencies to comply with the voter ID law.
You approve?

(4,296 posts)Have a care. A sound ethical system also requires winners to practice good sportsmanship. You would have a better chance of winning Bernie supporter over to Hillary in the general election if you show concern for the disenfranchisement of Black, old, and student voters.

Or you couldn't possibly say something as nasty as that.

(4,959 posts)Voter ID laws disproportionately effect young people/students, poor people, and minorities. They disproportionately effect Democratic voters. This fact is not in question. If you think that is 'funny', then I don't even know what to say to you. Perhaps I am misunderstanding your post but it seems like you are dismissive of the right to vote among these hundreds of thousands of people (in just 1 state, mind you). I hope I'm wrong, and if so, I apologize.

(11,359 posts)Perhaps the other disenfranchised voters were simply less well organized. A lot of elderly and poor voters have trouble with this too.
Even if this favors your chosen candidate in the primaries, it won't in the general election.
