President Obama thinks it is nearing time for Bernie Sanders to drop out of the race

President Obama privately told a group of donors at a DNC fundraising event in Austin, Texas, that he thought it was nearing time for Sen. Bernie Sanders to drop out of the presidential race and for the party to come together behind Hillary Clinton, The New York Times reports.

While Obama did not outright call for Sanders to drop out of the race, he reportedly said that a continued battle between the Democrats would only help the Republicans get ahead.

...While Obama stressed that he was not endorsing either candidate, and that both would make good presidents, Mr. Obama went on to lavish praise on Mrs. Clinton, describing her as smart, tough and experienced, and said that she would continue the work of his administration. Mr. Sanders has very publicly criticized Mr. Obama on certain policies and has called for a "political revolution."

Mr. Obama said that he understood the appeal to voters of a candidate who is authentic, the official said. But he also reminded the Texas donors in the room that Mr. Bush was considered authentic when he was running for president, suggesting that being authentic did not necessarily translate into being a good president, in his view.

The Times cited anonymous sources to describe what Obama said, but a White House official also confirmed his comments to the paper.

Obama, who has stayed neutral in the primary, "chose his words carefully, and did not explicitly call on Mr. Sanders to depart the race," The Times' Maggie Haberman and Michael Shear wrote.

"Still, those in attendance said in interviews that they took his comments as a signal to Mr. Sanders that perpetuating his campaign, which is now an uphill climb, could only help the Republicans recapture the White House," they added.

A source told The Times that Obama's tone was urgent as it increasingly appears that the Republican nominee will be Donald Trump.

Thu Mar 17, 2016, 05:46 PM
Mar 2016

BRANDON, S.D. — Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton defended staying in the Democratic nominating contest on Friday by pointing out that her husband had not wrapped up the nomination until June 1992, adding, “We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California.”

Her remarks were met with quick criticism from the campaign of Senator Barack Obama, and within hours of making them Mrs. Clinton expressed regret, saying, “The Kennedys have been much on my mind the last days because of Senator Kennedy,” referring to the recent diagnosis of Senator Edward M. Kennedy’s brain tumor. She added, “And I regret that if my referencing that moment of trauma for our entire nation and in particular the Kennedy family was in any way offensive.”

Still, the comments touched on one of the most sensitive aspects of the current presidential campaign — concern for Mr. Obama’s safety. And they come as Democrats have been talking increasingly of an Obama/Clinton ticket, with friends of the Clintons saying that Bill Clinton is musing about the possibility that the vice presidency might be his wife’s best path to the presidency if she loses the nomination.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/24/us/politics/24clinton.html?_r=0

It was disturbing when Hillary said that, her supporters don't mind it and that's why others use it to jab at Hillary and her supporters.

Here is video of that quote plus much other currently ironic patter from candidate Clinton about staying in the race:
