2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI was transacting a business this afternoon on the phone
And the sales person knows I'm a Democrat because the transaction involved a party event. He brought up the mess with the Republican primaries. Also telling me that he is a Republican. He told me he doesn't know what he is going to do. I told him I'm glad I am not in his shoes.

(146,287 posts)It's not always best to suggest that someone is not thinking of what's best for the country. That's a poor strategy for discussing politics with people from the other party.
I think the poster handled it just fine. He left it for that person to think about his choice in his own way. A business call is not an opportunity for campaigning, generally, I think.

One of the things that I include in the directory is historical or other information about the Democratic Party. Since the program directory goes through his hands I expect he would read it too.
Last year I included the speech "Why I am a Democrat" by former DNC Chair, Joe Andrew and also a chart showing 61 straight months of job growth.
How do you know if you're a Democrat? If you've ever met someone down on his or her luck, and you wanted to help, then you're a Democrat. If you have ever seen the look in a child's eyes of fear, of hunger, or of aspiration, and wanted to help, then you're a Democrat. If you have ever wanted leadership that had common sense, that cared about the future, and that wanted progress over partisanship, then you're a Democrat. If you believe that we are better off working together than apart, then you're a Democrat. If you believe in community, opportunity, and responsibility, then you are a Democrat.
I am a Democrat because Democrats fight for, and not just talk about, the American dream. We work to ensure that children do not have to experience fear, neglect, nor hunger, but instead grow up with the hopes and dreams of a better tomorrow. We understand that in working together we are greater than the sum of our parts. Democrats strive to be courageous leaders devoted to progress, rather than be roadblocks in the name of partisan battles. We are the party of diversity and inclusion, of innovation and inspiration, and of energy and optimism.
I am a Democrat because we welcome those who are downtrodden, neglected, and cast aside just the same as we welcome those who have the promise of a brighter future set in their dreams. I am a Democrat because we welcome you whether you're black or white or brown or red or a nice shade of purple. We welcome you whether you pray at a church or a mosque or a temple or a synagogue or at your kitchen table. We welcome you whether you're young or old or just don't want to tell your age. We welcome you regardless of what gender you are or what gender you want to hold hands with. I am a Democrat because we don't care where you are today, but where you dream you want to be tomorrow. This is the spirit of our Party and it's why I am proud to be a Democrat.
