2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI guess the 'revolution' is too much work in Colorado.
From Reddit:
I have some bad news. I just came back from the Colorado Douglas County Democratic Assembly and Convention. Here's what happened: We have more than 48,000 democrats in the county, but only about 4700 came out to cast a vote in the caucus. Out of those, Bernie Sanders got about 2300 votes, and Clinton got about 2000. So in theory, Bernie won our district by about 300 popular vote. However, because not enough Bernie Sander Delegate show up at the County Assembly and Convention, Clinton now has a 107 delegate, and Bernie 98.
My understanding is that some "non-committed" delegates went for Hillary, but the main reason we don't have enough delegate is that Bernie people are NOT showing up. I am no sure if it is due to them being naive, young, or new to the process, but that's the reality and that's what we are dealing with. Colorado is already a thin margin victory for Bernie, now because people are lazy and not bothering to show, we might end up losing.
Anyway, in my district, there are now 16 Clinton delegates and 12 Bernie delegates. Originally, there was supposed to be more Bernie delegates than Clinton! So we end up having to send 6 Clinton delegates and 4 Bernie delegates to the State Assembly. So we ended up losing by 2 delegates when we won the district by almost 10% in popular vote.
If you are a Bernie Delegate in Douglas County and you didn't bother to go to the convention today, YOU are the reason the delegates are not reflecting on people's voices. You cannot blame the party establishment, you cannot blame the media or the super delegates. YOU are responsible for us losing. If you pledge to be a delegate, then you NEED to show up. Either don't sign up in the beginning, or follow through if you do. It is the responsible things to do.
Anyway, sorry for the wall of text. I just need to vent a little.

(58,785 posts)realities that mean something in a representative democracy. There is advantage to drawing mature, stable voters. They go home after work, watch their kids and grandkids play ball on weekends, and mostly skip rallies, but they are more likely to be registered and to vote and, as seen, to show up as delegates.

(58,476 posts)On Super Tuesday, people met at the precinct level to select delegates to the County Conventions. Then the delegates elected at the Super Tuesday caucuses were to meet at the county level to send delegate to the state convention, where national delegates are ultimately selected. If you were elected delegate, you have to show up for the next step.

I'm just back from there. Sanders garnered 87 delegates to Clinton's 48. Sorry to give a reality check, Clinton supporters, but one of the richest counties in the state flipping over to Clinton does not equal a state-wide fail.

(28,442 posts)according to the Weld County Democrats page they were electing 133 delegates to the state convention. (They haven't updated their page yet to show the counts.) And then I think from the state convention they'll whittle it down to who goes to the national convention. I do know that state delegates can switch their votes to either candidate at any time, voting their conscience.

(28,442 posts)that it was pretty disenfranchising to anti-war protests that Bush decided to invade Iraq during spring break as so many student organizers were away from their organizing communities during that week. It's spring break for many, many colleges this week. So timing could have something to do with the youth turnout.

(3,733 posts)but it's much harder to deal with the fact that some of Bernies
delegates didn't show up if you have to consider that
the revolution is fizzling or the supporters are losing interest or
that participation is waning as more and more people see the writing on the wall.
Much easier and comforting to blame it on a conspiracy or DNC shenanigans
or the rich or dirty tricks by Hillary supporters.

(146,254 posts)We always have some delegates elected at the precinct level who do not show up at the next level' s convention. It has happened every time I've been there.
Those who don't show up can't participate. I always show up.

I wonder what the OP has done beside sitting on his or her ass and typing on a message board.

(685 posts)And that is not the results they announced. Bernie ended up with 5 more votes than Hillary received county wide. However she received more delegates going to the state convention. While they did not explain this, maybe because of the actual delegate flips and no shows, I attributed it to the fact that there must have been precincts with higher Bernie votes. However there is a limit to the amount of delegates a precinct will send to the county convention no matter the total number of votes.
