2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumIt's fair to ask campaigns to call out bad online conduct by "supporters"-and our campaign does.
It's not fair to hold the candidate him or herself to blame for such conduct...especially our candidate, who has always condemned those who said unacceptable things while claiming to support him.

(9,527 posts)Sanders isn't doing anything to encourage violence. I think the worst of the Sanders supporters (the ones who attack Elizabeth Warren or Trayvon Martin's mother) are part of a much larger issue that there are trolls on the internet where awful behavior builds on itself. Sanders hasn't pushed for that to happen. I do appreciate Sanders asking them to stop, but I don't think he was responsible for it and therefore it isn't fair to attach that to him.
Trump on the other hand, encourages his supporters to get violent and offers to pay their legal fees. He owns that.

(2,197 posts)I think that of this were merely a troll infestation, it wouldn't be a problem at all.
The other thing is...the internet is a forum (and I do mean that in the ancient sense of the word) where politics is discussed and communicated and info is disseminated.

(50,254 posts)1) If the posts that person makes are almost entirely devoted to personal abuse towards other posters or the subject of the posts;
2) If the offensive posts continue(in the context of candidate posts in particular)when the candidate the poster is supposedly supporting has asked, and asked repeatedly, for the offensive posting to stop;
3) If the poster continues to make offensive posts or escalates in the offensiveness at a time when it should be clear that making such posts harms the chances of the candidate the poster claims to support.

(2,197 posts)Having said that, there are times when long-standing posters act trollish...which is really where my own line is, personally...
