(50,254 posts)What possible good reason could there be to announce results and project winners while large numbers of people in the state in question, wherever that state might be, are still waiting to vote?

(154,021 posts)until the next day. This shit affects turnout in the West Coast where it is not just about a Presidential election. And Hawaii has not even started to vote.

(50,254 posts)That could be achieved by simply getting broadcasters and state election departments to voluntarily agree to that.

The race was called for Ronald Reagan well before the polls closed on the west coast. There were many reports of voters leaving the line, knowing there was no point in voting.
While Reagan was going to win, no matter when the election was called, that early call probably had a huge impact on the down ticket races in the western states.
