2016 Postmortem

Fascinating that such a religiously symbolic incident would actually happen on Good Friday to a Jewish Candidate for the Presidency of the United States who honestly believes in the people
If you actually believe ...
Believe in People ...
Believe in a future for your Children ....
"That little bird is actually a Dove asking us for World Peace"
All that and the Corporate Media (MSNBC) actually covered the event airing his speech in it's entirety rather then cutting away to an empty chair at a Trump rally
Some thing Really Yuuuge Happened today

(15,435 posts)religious anymore. I might see it as a spiritual message not so much a religious one.
I absolutely LOVE Mother Nature and ALL of it's creatures. I'm constantly distressed by all that's happening to them, but I've decided that this ONE MOMENT at his rally yesterday will always be a VERY Special moment in all my years of following politics.
The reaction and nasty comments about this little bird has shown me a side of many people here who have downplayed and talked about what a common, dreary, hungry, craggy, piddly looking bird it was! PEOPLE talking about what an UGLY bird this was simply to poke fun and make the incident something other than it was is quite PATHETIC!
Do you really need to ATTACK A BIRD??? It was a moment to be enjoyed and remembered and to interject such negativity by describing the bird as nothing less than a "poor, brown lost bird" says so much more about the people who keep doing this than it does about the bird.
I made a comment similar to this last when someone started talking this way...
I live on the west coast of Florida, go to the beach and you see birds of all types flying around trying to steal food from sun bathers all the time. There are birds at almost EVERY grocery store you go to and people throw them crumbs, even open up packages to give them something. Or maybe some other tidbit that they gladly gobble up. I feed my squirrels every day, don't dislike birds in any way but I find I have to sit with the squirrels BECAUSE the Blue Jays swoop in immediately to grab the peanuts! THEY obviously are well fed because many people here DO feed peanuts and sunflowers in my little community all the time. All I have to do it say a few words and here come the birds BEFORE many of the squirrels get there.
But NONE of them have EVER perched on my shoulder waiting for something. I'm AWARE that pigeons and many other types of birds act differently and aren't affected by people, just like they don't mind the people at the grocery store. I've been in places like Costco and can hear and see that there are birds who've made nests up in the rafters, but I've never seen them come sit at a cash register looking at customers. Has it never happened? I don't know it could have, but I doubt it's something that happens on a regular basis. The ones at the beach just KNOW people bring food and THEY WANT SOME! Those of us who live here try NOT to open food around them because of the DEPOSITS they leave! Sometimes large deposits! We tell people not to feed the birds because of this.
There are egrets and all types of birds that come into my yard all the time! I used to buy chicken necks for some of the larger birds because they DON'T want peanuts, but my husband made me stop because of THEIR huge deposits on cars and everywhere else.
SO, just because THIS BIRD incident happened as it did doesn't warrant this kind of attack on a bird! I found it to be very enjoyable and very uplifting and I would have felt the same way no matter WHO it happened to. Take away what you want from it, some of us find it a little inspirational and DOVES are used ALL THE TIME for inspiration on many different occasions!
So it wasn't a DOVE, but what Bernie said sent an inspirational message to thousands of people! So he's NOT who you support, but to ATTACK the bird and call it names is what I said... PATHETIC, IMO!

(15,435 posts)Whether Bernie gets the nomination or not, he's shown this country the "better side of humanity" in this election! He WILL NEVER be forgotten and his legacy will live on now more than ever!
He's been able to IGNITE thousands of people with a Compassionate message for THE FUTURE! Never forget where he started out, what he's been able to build and the people who have a MORE POSITIVE approval of him than any other candidate and yet THE POWER BROKERS have worked so hard against him!
Our country has gone so far off the rails and has been headed down the wrong path for WAY TOO LONG, but unfortunately by hook or by crook the STATUS QUO seems just fine for some!
Call these voting irregularities "conspiracy theories" if you want, but many of us have seen The Clintons's play this game before and find it hard to believe that these things are just irregularities. I have a personal experience of my own to talk about and what happened here in FL, but given that it's FL didn't say much until recently. I KNOW for a fact that something funny went on with my daughter, her husband, my son and his wife when they voted here by absentee! We have NO IDEA if their vote was ever counted and we have NO WAY of finding out without hiring a lawyer. WE CAN'T AFFORD to hire one and even then it won't even be addressed until AFTER the election.
So, should Hillary become the nominee it's only a slap in my face because she WILL NEVER get my respect. INTEGRITY isn't a word I will ever use to describe her. I've never felt worse about having to vote for a person in my life, IF I have to vote for her. But, I'm sure she doesn't care at all. To win by any means is what she's shown me, not just this time around... it's what THE CLINTONS do!
I'm not sure we're being given a real choice. I think we may have to eat what they want to feed us! That's NOT DEMOCRACY and that's NOT what I thought this country stood for.
Remember... FOOL ME ONCE???? I was fooled once, I won't be fooled again!

(31,935 posts)they are cheering with joy and delight, as birds are often seen as messengers, and finches represent joy, celebration, and good tidings.
Have you ever been in a Lowes? Costco? Home Depot? Look up. Small birds are always in the rafters. They just don't land where you can see them until the store closes, then they gobble up food, insects drawn in by food, and fly in and out of loading bay doors for water and anything else they need. They're savvy, not "trapped". But is putting a negative spin on a throughly delightful event comforts you, then so but it. The rest of us will enjoy this delightful, very unusual and unexpected event as a good sign. The wild things always know who has a kind heart and a wise soul.

(146,262 posts)Really? It's a freaking miracle, then.
Birds in big open buildings. There are some in all of them. They get used to people. Sometimes, birds like sparrows and finches depend on people to feed them in buildings like they. They eat crumbs and food dropped by people attending events. They get pretty darned tame, really.
There are some birds in my local Home Depot. I suspect some employees there feed them, because last time I was there, over in the garden tools aisle, a house finch flew down and landed near me and looked up expectantly. Sadly, I didn't have anything to offer, so it flew off again.
We have finches in our yard, too. They eat at the bird feeder that we keep full. Sometimes, I go out there with some birdseed on my hand. Finches, chickadees, and jays often fly down and land on my hand to eat. Birds are funny. If you feed them, they show up.
I don't think Jesus had anything to do with this, really, unless it was a Hispanic worker named Jesus who sometimes feeds the birds inside that venue. Who can say?

(53,016 posts)astounding. That people even think such a thing desirable says something deeply disturbing about society.
I want elected officials who are held accountable to the people they elect, and I will never support the anti-democratic and anti-egalitarian notion that a politician is so superior to the rest of humanity that he is treated as messianic. Such a construction reviews an extremely hierarchical view of humanity that is diametrically opposed to equality. That kind of uncritical reverence for one man, which requires willfully ignoring key parts of his record and blatant disparities between his rhetoric and action, is irresponsible and as far removed from civic engagement as anything I can imagine. The notion of divine right of rule underlay monarchies, but we are a republic, which requires a critically engaged citizenry. Without that, we don't stand a chance.

The cable news cycle? WTF cares? Are you seriously claiming that bird is some sign from God that he is chosen?
The fact Sanders supporters treat him as god-like is unseemly. This whole faith-based approach to politics depends on a complete suspension of critical thinking, which is the opposite of what civic engagement is all about.
As for what went over my head, you made a direct reference to a Christian holiday that marks the death of Jesus of Nazareth. Then you lecture me because you've decided the only relevant part is the word "good." Good Friday and Easter have both passed. Bernie has neither died nor been resurrected. He's a politician. That his supporters insist on treating him as divine is as strong of an argument against his candidacy as I can imagine. Participatory democracy requires critical engagement, which is the exact opposite of religious worship, which treats criticism as heresy.
