The party establishment wanted to prevent a grass roots movement from nominating a candidate that was further left than they want.

Lose our collective minds and do something crazy- ya know, like nominate a 74 year old Democratic Socialist. (Yes, I'm a Sanders supporter and this is snark- but not about this being to protect the party establishment from the will of the people if they don't like our choice.)
