2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumPedestrians kept at least a block away from Hillary's Madison event.
At her typical exclusive fundraisers, held in gated private estates, we see photos of cops directing traffic, but people have been able to assemble on public streets to watch her arrive and depart, and even to wave a few signs and demonstrate. No mas, boss!
In Madison, the entire block surrounding the venue will be "closed to pedestrians". We're talking public sidewalks and streets in the heart of a state university.
Hey! Hillary don't need no stinkin' right of assembly or freedom of speech in her America!
Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton will speak in Madison on Monday, two days after her Democratic opponent, Bernie Sanders, drew a large crowd here and touted his campaign's momentum.
Clinton will make remarks to invited guests at UW-Madison's Gordon Commons, 770 W. Dayton Street, at 3:45 p.m. Doors open at 2:45 p.m. A UW-Madison news release says the event is not open to the campus community or the public.
Because of Clinton's appearance, Lake Street will be closed to traffic between Dayton and Johnson streets, starting at about noon, and to pedestrians after 3 p.m., until the event is over.

(67,086 posts)it comes to big money, R=D in USA, Inc. People matter little, it's all about who has the most money and they get what they want. Money talks, has power, and creates favors and action. The rest of us just talk. I will vote for the nominee, but I am going to have a very hard time voting for HRC, but I will if necessary. And I will change my affiliation to "I." I don't want the DNC/DWS/DLC/HRC to think I like their actions.

(3,017 posts)She has been sending Chelsea to campus events as a surrogate to spare herself the embarrassment of facing hostile audiences. And now she is going to throw gasoline on the fire by holding a private event in the middle of the University of Wisconsin campus and inconveniencing UW students? I hope there are mass protests.

(15,480 posts)They've been holding sit-ins and sing-ins right in the state capitol building for years - and HRC is NOT their cup of tea. I expect she'll receive a particularly rousing welcome/protest from them.
As you point out, this is a 4-5 hour, all afternoon disruption of the campus. Spring break ended last Friday. Monday will be the first day of classes resuming. Way to fuck up campus traffic in general, and particularly getting from one class to another on a tight schedule!

(230 posts)... going to a college campus and allowing very few, if any, of the actual students attend. What's the point? (15,480 posts)Are people paying to attend? Who's on the guest list? This is a taxpayer supported public university. Yes, they can rent out facilities - but to deny access to tuition paying students to a square block of campus? Any classrooms in that block, parking facilities for which people purchased passes?
Good god almighty! This is not like closing down the elite hair salon at Bergdorf's for her to get her $1200 cut and dye job. This is a public, state university!

The venue is the Gordon Events Center. The university "Facilities Use Policy" refers to all university facilities, not just "auditoriums".
Under specific conditions, student organizations, political parties or candidates for public office
may reserve University facilities for political purposes. A political purpose includes any action
taken to influence the nomination, election, or re-election of an individual to public office, or to
influence the vote in a referendum." (sec. 11.01 (16) Wis. Stats.) The Wisconsin Statutes, Board
of Regents regulations and UW-Madison rules all affect the ways in which University facilities
may be used for political purposes.
Please also note that the policy refers to reserving University facilities for political purposes. There is no dancing around with whether a reservation/use fee is charged or not.

(15,480 posts)In case you are posting from somewhere overseas, and do not have access to a map of the U .S., here's the deal. Wisconsin is a state. Madison, Wisconsin is the state capitol, as well as home to the main campus of the state's public university, known as the University of Wisconsin. Milwaukee is a different city, and the largest city in the state of Wisconsin. The 2 cities are 79 miles apart from each other.

In post 44, YOU describe the Madison event as a fundraiser. The link you provided does list fund raisers, but makes no mention of the Madison event, whether as a fundraiser or an organizational meeting, or in any capacity whatsoever.
I suggest you devote your efforts in support of Hillary to helping her campaign get its act together, rather than drawing attention (via your DU posts) of the confusion which evidently reigns there.

(22,651 posts)Ticketed events aren't listed when full. I lived in Milwaukee, Wis. on West Wisconsin Ave. It's a very fast, easy drive/flight to Madison. I think Mrs. Clintons campaign is very organized, she has been working on it for almost a decade.

(3,017 posts)I didn't see any PDF. Both links went to an article. What you cite from UW policy suggests to me that each Presidential candidate can have free use of a UW facility for campaign events that are open to the public. It doesn't say that UW facilities can't be rented for events that are not open to the public. Whether or not Hillary's campaign is paying rent on this facility (and paying for security to block off a square block around it) would be interesting. I doubt UW is in the habit of closing off areas of campus while school is in session.
Regardless, I'm just happy Hillary is so tone deaf as to do something this stupid. It just tells everybody more about who she is and why she should not be the Democratic nominee for President. Though I would prefer that she held an open campus event where students could heckle her. Either way, I'm glad to see Hillary in Madison!

Clinton to hold Monday event at Gordon
March 27, 2016
Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton will hold an event on the University of WisconsinMadison campus on Monday afternoon.
The event, to be held at Gordon Dining & Events Center, is being ticketed by the Clinton campaign and is not open to the campus community or public.
Both Democratic and Republican candidates are crisscrossing the state in advance of the April 5 Wisconsin primary. Per UW policy, each candidate may hold one event on campus each election.

(3,017 posts)I read the PDF and don't see anything that says this meeting would be a violation of UW policy. The document seems to be talking about how student political organizations and political campaigns can get free access to UW facilities. There is no language about the University excluding private political events. Not that I think it would stop Hillary even if there was such language.
Divernan
(15,480 posts)According to the University's own, formal announcement of this Clinton event, the Clinton campaign is in blatant violation of university policy, which CLEARLY AND EXPLICITLY STATES THAT SAID EVENT BE PUBLIC!
Paragraph 5 of the university's statement of policy states:
During an election campaign, such as the primary or general election, each
recognized candidate for public office may hold one public meeting at a
University auditorium. In addition, each political party may hold one public
meeting at a University auditorium on behalf of its candidates for national office,
and one public meeting on behalf of its candidates for statewide office.
