2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forum"He's Going to Campaign Like A Brooklynite"
Hes going to campaign like a Brooklynite, and shes going to campaign like a senator who represented the state for eight years and lived here for 16, Benenson said, in a severely misguided attempt to portray Sanders and his Brooklyn roots as somehow below the standard of the U.S. Senate.
Benesons comments have even inspired the trending Twitter hashtag #ToneDownForWhat.
This follows a trend of the Clinton camp talking down to voters who lack the same resources as her (see: Clintons infamous "Why don't you go run for something, then?" comments in Minnesota).

Understanding Clintons motivation for declining a New York debate is difficult, especially considering Clinton auspiciously opened her campaign headquarters in Brooklyn Heights.
Seeking to tap into that faux authenticity that is a gentrified Brooklyn, the campaign took up two floors last year at the Pierrepont Plaza, which is described on its website as Modern Offices. Brooklyn Cool. Was this not an attempt to campaign as a Brooklynite? Or was she only interested in a certain segment of the Brooklyn population?
As a two-term New York Senator she did get friendly with one New York City institution: Wall Street. Senator Clinton did little to regulate the runaway banking industry while taking enormous political contributions for the duration of her term.
Keeping in mind her failure to truly represent New Yorkers, her hesitancy to debate becomes obvious: her opponent has the Ebbots Fieldi.e. home fieldadvantage.
Sanders Brooklyn is one of immigrants, people of color and the working class. Clintons is an upwardly mobile, overly developed and gentrified Brooklyn.
What part of New York is Mrs. Clinton afraid of?
She wants the liberal-condo-vote but not the vote of the working people of New York who have lived here long enough to understand the social and political realities of this city.

(20,317 posts)And it's not nice. Hillary's constantly shifting, phony accents, the shallow pandering, the positions that flip 180 degrees depending on geography, and of course the moments like these... they speak of a real disdain for anyone not in the 'upper class'.

(37 posts)They know Clinton took advantage of their kindness and launched her government career off their backs.
The message will be loud and clear.

It's totally obvious that was not intended to belittle, demean or insult Bernie.
Yep, totally.

BTW, what I am feeling these days is far from despair.

(59,474 posts)Having moved to Vermont three years ago, I have learned that to be a Vermonter, a driver's license does not suffice. It takes a Vermont birth certificate .. or as some argue not just your own Vermont birth certificate, but your parents', grandparents' etc. - with different people positing different histories.
Yet, we saw that Vermont loves Senator Sanders. He has, by more than 10 points, the highest approval rate for a Senator in any state. 83% - and that is for ALL people, not just Democrats.
However, he still speaks with the distinct Brooklyn accent of his childhood - no matter where he speaks. From the answer he gave on his religion, he is very defined by the Brooklyn Jewish community that he was born into. He went to neighborhood grade school and the same high school that Chuck Schumer went to. It seems that you can take the man out of Brooklyn, but you can't take the Brooklyn out of the man.
Still, it is true that the Brooklyn of 2016 is nothing like the Brooklyn of the 1940s and 1950s . In fact, it has gone through many phases since then. A large part of the Jews of Brooklyn moved to NJ, CT, and upstate NY as Brooklyn changed in the 1970s and 1980s. The gentrification that has made Brooklyn a cool place to be surprised many of my husband's older NYC area (Jewish) relatives. It may be that there are not many in NY who identify with Bernie Sanders' Brooklyn.
I would love to hear the comments of people who actually know present day Brooklyn - which I don't. ( I have a daughter who lived there for a few years, ending about 2 years ago. )
On the other hand, Brooklyn now has many very educated young people who are part of that gentrification. But, aren't young people anywhere, Bernie's base? Then there are the Orthodox Jewish communities which are night and day from the secular Jewish communities. Not to mention, that there is a very high percent POC. The latter two likely help Clinton. It will be interesting to see how the neighborhoods come in.
Though it is very small, one thing not mentioned is that the Plattsburg area has some TV stations that are Plattsburg/Burlington. We CAN see NYS from Burlington - across beautiful Lake Champlain! This might be a small area of Bernie support!

I don't know what he meant. But I think Brooklyn being one of the most admired places in the country right now , the culture of Brooklyn being associated with spirit, and spunk, and energy and resolve, I think thats a compliment, Hizzoner said.
