I can't believe I'm typing this: In Defense of Republicans!!!

We have a lot of people on this board who have an "auto ignore" in place when their candidate is criticized. This seems especially true for those who admire, respect and support Hillary Clinton, who has candidly been the target of more right wing vitriol than anyone other than her husband since the pair first came onto the national political scene in the early 1990s. She has NEVER been a "stay home and bake cookies" type of woman, and her keen intellect definitely irked the "sit there, shut up and look pretty" crowd.

I was an adult during the 1990s, and I believed the Clintons were unfairly attacked on a regular basis. Some of it was undoubtedly their own fault as they struggled to adjust to their new neighbood and made a fair share of mistakes, and some of it was bitter partisan politics, and a great deal of it was hypocritical political theater. I though Bill was a good President, but honestly, the ongoing drama got old.

The Bush years were the worst. (shudder)

When Benghazi was mentioned, I started rolling my eyes. Of course the State Department lied a bit to the public in the beginning - duh! Don't reveal the extent of your surveillance of criminals on the nightly news! - and the hearings seemed like "Clinton Witch Hunt 2.0" to the point where after a cursory skim of the topic, I tuned it out. The "silly email scandal" seemed like more of the same...

BUT.

It's not.

Like it or not, the Republican led subcommittee actually did their jobs. They uncovered a serious, actual real live SCANDAL involving issues of national security. There are dozens of articles and threads on this site explaining the sort-of complicated/but not really difficult to understand story, but bluntly, at the end of the day, this is 100% a Hillary Clinton Epic Screw Up.

And the Republicans caught her.

Now, this is the hard part for me: They did what they were suppose to do.

That is hard to swallow for me, but the reality is we have a two party system so they can keep an eye on each other and make sure neither abuses the system. They are BOTH supposed to hold each other accountable, and we as citizens EXPECT them to do that.

It's only when "both sides" collude to hide wrong doing that things get messed up - the fact the Democrats didn't scream bloody murder about the non-existence of WMDs in Iraq is a great example - because, while we want them to "get along", we also know the more eyes watching each other, the better because we are talking about access to power and money at levels that tempt and corrupt most mere mortals.

Hillary Clinton is now going to be deposed under oath in two separate law suits about hiding government records from groups using the Freedom of Information Act. The FBI is ALSO completing an investigation into whether any criminal charges should or will be brought for her actions. These things are NOT SMEARS - no Republicans took her by the hand and instructed her to behave like an entitled idiot "because she didn't want to carry two devices" to quote her justification.

She screwed up. The Republicans did their jobs. I am stunned to say it, but I think the system worked as intended.

I would have preferred if the offender, however, hadn't been someone on the Democratic Team.

For the system to have fully worked, we must wait and as a result of all of this mess we should expect to see a few things happen:

New rules created and made clear that prevent this kind of bullshit from happening again. Running your own private email server off a computer housed in your own private residence and using a civilian third party for backup, that's just damned crazy and by no means secure.

Actual punishments as prescribed by law, no special treatment. If no laws were broken, then fine, but if others have been punished for the same types of breaches, then the Clintons and their people need to be held to the same standard.

What a mess.

It's when the two parties agree on something is when we have to keep our backs to the wall and keep our eyes open.
The voting machines are a great case in point, we know they are flawed, programmers know they are flawed, college professors teaching computer science know they are flawed, but neither party seems to think anything is wrong.

Bernie is the current leader of the political revolution and he has my support.

ALERTER'S COMMENTS

Defending right wing Republican attacks against Democrats.

You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Thu Mar 31, 2016, 03:59 PM, and the Jury voted 1-6 to LEAVE IT.

Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: It would have been nice if Democrats had done their duty and investigated the Bush administration. You know, like we did Watergate.
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: She's defending the system, not attacks.
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: This seems to be a factual description of what is awaiting Hillary Clinton in the very near future. Plus, this DUer has long been a member of this forum, and not someone who would defend "right wing Republican attacks."
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: I don't see this as an attack. The piece is truthful, not hateful and has only facts. Leave it be. Stop putting candidates on pedestals regardless of what party they represent.
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Since when do we alert on truth?
Juror #7 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: Glad to hide this. And really, not the first tie I've wondered about this poster in a long time, even before primaries. I don't think it bothered her one bit to repeat right wing lies.

Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

The Republicans were not right to waste taxpayer dollars on a witch hunt to tar the presumptive Democratic nominee. These cheap partisan tricks are never acceptable and it's shameful that anyone here would co-sign that mess.

I am concerned that Hi11ary supporters are insisting that the FBI investigation regarding her emails can be dismissed as a "right wing lie." I cannot comprehend how we are supposed to support a candidate who is about to be indicted.

11. Another law and order "progressive"

No, the Republicans did not do their jobs. Hillary legally used a private email server, but the Republicans are using that as an excuse to comb through all her emails and seek out possible violations. Perhaps for every politician who legally uses email, the Republicans should be able to comb through their emails and see if they find any violations. There is no logical reason how her legal use of a private email system should have led to the search through all her emails. I think if they are doing their jobs, then they should search through the emails of every politician who legally uses a public or private email service. We have no way of knowing if anyone else abused their public or private email accounts, so there is no sensible baseline here.

But, good for you for taking a tough law and order stand on national security, and I'm sure it has nothing to do with your support for Bernie. How do you think we should go about investigating the VA Scandal that happened on his watch? Maybe seek out all his emails? Would you support the Republicans doing that?

16. I will copy from another post I made.

Mar 2016

I have another post with links if you want, also.

There are over a thousand emails that should never have been sent, with 22 that were so classified we won't see them for decades. That doesn't even address the "kept government property in her basement" or "evaded complying with FOIA laws" or "didn't provide all documents in her possession to a House committee who subpoenaed them/lied that they didn't exist" or "communicated about secret/classified information with an employee of the Clinton Foundation who didn't have clearance" or "attempted to delete 30k government emails that were evidence in a possible criminal investigation" or even the speculation that a bunch of those emails contain evidence of "pay to play" against US interests with money laundered through the Clinton Foundation. This is NOT a right wing conspiracy - this is epic bad judgment and usually involves jail for people who commit these acts. The question of whether or not she is above the law is what everyone is watching. (And yes, she knew what she was doing - she even sent an email to staff warning them against mixing their personal and business email accounts!)

this situation of such technical complexities (and another post with links would not help me). I have to depend on the government watchdog agencies to make the findings known. Bottom line, I have to wait for the investigation to reach it's conclusion. Thanks though.

But that's not even a gleam in anyone's eye.

The email "scandal" if just like every other "scandal" targeting the Clintons - no scandal at all, made up of lies, cobbled up by the RW as a political witch hunt. The fact that the Berniestas and BoBs are salivating over it as much as any Tebagger Republican speaks volumes.
