Congress critters and Senators have to release thorough financial disclosures EVERY. SINGLE. YEAR.

The Ethics in Government Act of 1978 is a United States federal law that was passed in the wake of the Nixon Watergate scandal and the Saturday Night Massacre. It created mandatory, public disclosure of financial and employment history of public officials and their immediate family. It also created restrictions on lobbying efforts by public officials for a set period after leaving public office. Last, it created the U.S. Office of Independent Counsel, tasked with investigating government officials.

The most basic criticism of the Ethics in Government Act has been that it repels good people because of its excessive levels of disclosure.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethics_in_Government_Act

This is why I always thought concern over Kerry and McCain's taxes was idiotic. The same goes for Bernie. Anyone that has spent decades as a public official subject to this law has been releasing relevant financial information since this law was passed. This is just one of the many reasons the "criticism" aimed at Bernie Sander's over his tax returns is disingenuous nonsense.

Romney, of course, wasn't subject to these disclosures and thats why his tax returns were important. Otherwise, I would defend him on it as well.

Of course, when Sanders does ultimately put the information out there and there is nothing interesting to see, I'm sure the people running their mouths about it today will give a full throated apology right?

1. Clinton and Obama both disclosed their taxes while running for President, as sitting Senators.

It's the hypocrisy--wags his finger at Clinton over transcripts, but doesn't meet the minimum transparency measures expected of candidates himself.

Sanctimony and hypocrisy are two sides of the same coin.

2. You really shouldn't bring up "wagging fingers" while attempting to defend...

...a Clinton supporter talking point. Thats about as low hanging fruit as it gets if I wanted to turn your remarks right back in your face... however I don't think theres any reason to go for such an easy cheap shot right this moment.

But as I asked another poster in another thread...

Have you even bothered to look at Bernie's financial disclosures? What question do you want answered that you can't get from those disclosures? Do you even have an actual, valid argument to make regarding what you want to see in Bernie's tax returns that you aren't seeing in his decades of public financial disclosures? I'm trying to understand if you and others are complaining about this because you THINK there is merit to it or because its just something to complain about.

I expect you'll be able to answer those questions with answers that make sense right?

6. Obama and Clinton didn't make that kind of excuse in 2008. Why should Sanders be held to a lower

standard?

Sanders has made a great big sanctimonious show of his asking for Clinton of those transcripts, while not providing anywhere near the same level of personal financial disclosure that Clinton has.

That makes him a giant hypocrite.

7. When has Sanders said he will not release his returns?

I'm pretty sure he said that he would release them, he just hasn't done it yet. That in and of itself makes your claims of hypocrisy a total failure of an argument. Now please, will you answer my questions? Were my questions too inconvenient for you to bother with? It's awfully hard to take you seriously when you duck behind other topics in order to hide from very legitimate questions that I have asked.

9. Seriously?

public speeches are not the same as private speeches. Romney proved that one the hard way with his 47% remark.

All Hillary's public speeches are available. It's the private ones to the big banks that are interesting because of conflict of interest.

But then you knew that. You guys are scared she might actually have to expose herself and post them, and there will be things on there that don't look good.

So sad...too bad.

And don't worry, be happy...Bernie will get his tax filings posted when he has time. He probably hasn't even been home in weeks. These events run seven days a week in multiiple states. Do you really expect him to stop campaigning to run home and do this for you?

Maybe they should not "rush" to get them out, but instead make sure they are accurate.

Are any of the names in the Panama Papers linked with the Clinton Foundation? They are refiling their taxes for not reporting Foreign Donations accurately for at least three years. (self.PanamaPapers)

Hillary Clinton's family's charities are refiling at least five annual tax returns after a Reuters review found errors in how they reported donations from governments, and said they may audit other Clinton Foundation returns in case of other errors.

He should drop the sanctimony over Clinton's speeches while making excuses for his own lack of transparency.

He doesn't have to do it because I demand it, no.

But, I and plenty of others will be pointing out the hypocrisy and speculating about why he didn't disclose this from the get-go and lead by example.

Cause she knew you guys would go for this no matter what.

He should drop the sanctimony over Clinton's speeches while making excuses for his own lack of transparency.

There is NO comparison. He said he will post them (when they have time) and he will when he gets home from campaigning long enough to do it. And she said she refuses to release her speeches (unless some impossible conditions are met by all republican candidates who could care less if she reveals them or not). So basically she said NO SHIT SHIRLOCK!

But you guys are chasing the red dot she is flashing around for you...I bet she enjoys the game.

So Sanders will be completely transparent, if the kitties chasing the laser dot can just hold their bladders, but she will never show her speeches. No transparency on her side, but that's what we have learned to expect from her.

39. Please read this article about Rubio and Cruz's tax disclosures.

http://www.politico.com/story/2016/02/marco-rubio-tax-returns-219905

Republican presidential candidates Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz have repeatedly demanded that front-runner Donald Trump release his tax returns, but both stopped well short of fully disclosing their own returns.

Each on Saturday released brief summaries of their recent returns that described their income and tax bills in broad terms, but both provided few details on things like which deductions they claimed and why, or how much they gave to charity.

That may undermine their repeated demands that Trump provide his returns, something he’s refused to do because he says he’s being audited.

Rubio, who’s long been dogged by questions over his personal finances, provided the first two pages of each of his last five tax returns. They show he paid a 23.5 percent tax rate on $335,561 in income in 2014. His income has varied widely over the past five years, from as little as $183,826 in 2010 to $929,439 in 2012.

Cruz followed several hours later, also by releasing only the first two pages of his tax returns from the past four years. They show he paid $442,701 in taxes on $1.2 million in adjusted gross income in 2014.

The twin releases are aimed at upping the pressure on Trump to produce his own returns. Eager to slow his momentum before Super Tuesday, they’ve argued that Republicans have a right to know of any problems with Trump’s taxes before the party settles on a nominee. That could potentially embarrass Trump by showing he paid an unusually low tax rate or used aggressive tax-avoidance strategies or perhaps isn’t as wealthy as he boasts.

But Rubio and Cruz undercut their own promises of transparency by releasing only partial returns, said Joe Thorndike, a tax historian.

“Until they release full returns, this exercise is more about politics than real transparency,” he said. “I wish both Rubio and Cruz would take a page from their hero, Ronald Reagan, who released a full return when running in 1980. It was only a single year, but one complete return is more valuable than a dozen partial ones.”

Asked why Rubio is not releasing his entire returns, campaign spokesman Alex Conant said, “We're not ruling anything out. What we released today is consistent with what he released during his Senate campaign — and way more than any of the other top GOP candidates have released.”

52. Transparency?

In 1992, during Bill Clinton's first run for office, the Clintons declined to release all of their tax returns because, it turned out, a few of the returns showed Hillary Clinton's incredible success in commodities trading when Bill Clinton was attorney general and then governor of Arkansas.

She made almost $100,000 from an initial investment of $1,000 in a matter of months — a return of 10,000% — under the guidance of a lawyer who was also outside counsel to Tyson Foods Inc., Arkansas' largest employer. The returns weren't made public until 1994.

72. From the creators of the Birther movement, comes the equally stupid

'tax return' demands. And just like the birth certificate nonsense, I expect these new demands will prove similarly malleable.

3. And if there was anything fishy Brock would have found it in his disclosures.

It's a witch hunt, even after he released them they would continue to say he and Jane have money in overseas accounts.

Thats a mighty short attention span if you really think that?

Aside from that, Bernie is going to release his tax returns anyway and it will be a moot point.

63. That's genuinely pathetic.

It's not 'blaming his wife' to tell the press that his wife does his returns, its an explanation of why he couldn't for instance just ring his accountant and have them mailed over.

89. There's a different standard at the Presidential level. Summary forms don't cut it, and full returns

are the standard. I.E. not what Bernie has produced so far.

Call my cynical, but I have trouble accepting Bernie's "My wife ate our tax returns" defense for why they haven't been released already. I was born, but not yesterday.

Not just words. Just as much as I want Trump's as well. And BTW, I have a pretty good idea why both are reluctant - basically their base would be in shock at the discrepancy from the words.
