2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumIs this True? Bernie speaks in the Vatican on same day Hillary speaks at Hong Kong fundraiser?
Apparently, the day after the NYC debate, both Sanders and Clinton will travel abroad. While Bernie speaks at the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences on the global economy and environmental sustainability, Clinton will attend a fundraiser in Hong Kong hosted by Gary Gensler who was a partner at Goldman Sachs before heading up the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Read the article multiple times because I thought I was probably missing something - a fundraiser in the global financial capital of Hong Kong?
CORRECTION: hmm. should I delete this post? I just read that article again and revisited the speech schedule. Didn't realize that the speeches listed were for all pro-Clinton speeches no matter who was giving them. Fundraiser, yes. Clinton attendance, no. Sorry!

Or was the advice given for Bernie merely ageist.

(84,711 posts)It can go both ways. Although Bernie is NOT meeting with the Pope. He is going to discuss issues of Inequality as a Global Issue.

(6,007 posts)She said that Bernie was presumptuous and called to invite himself.
I sent them the words and link to that statement from her boss that HE invited Bernie.
"This is not true and she knows it. I invited him with her consensus," said Sorondo, who is senior to Archer.

(1,166 posts)because there are interesting posts on the thread; however, I got it wrong about Clinton giving the speech in Hong Kong. It looks like it's Ensler who is giving the speech. Not entirely clear since the schedule of speeches is listed as Clinton speeches. Can someone tell me if it's a good idea just to delete this post? (It's nonetheless an interesting and telling juxtaposition of events.)

(1,166 posts)It looks like the original stories published by US-Uncut and Daily Kos less than 10 hours ago were recently updated with correction saying that she, in fact, was not going to attend the event in Hong Kong. At least now I know I didn't misread what I read in what are pretty dependable sources.

<If you watched Sunday's Democratic debate, you learned something interesting about Bernie Sanders: he voted for the Commodities Futures Modernization Act, something Hillary Clinton was all too eager to point out when the two of them got to talking about Wall Street reform.
Sounds pretty bad, right? The guy who goes on and on about how bad Wall Street is actually voted for the bill that crashed economy. So much for all that "political revolution" stuff.
But here's the thing: Hillary Clinton isn't telling a true story about Bernie Sanders and his vote for the Commodity Futures Modernization Act, or CFMA.
As Robert Scheer has pointed out over at Truthdig, then-Congressman Sanders voted for the CFMA, not because he wanted to, but because he had to.
The CFMA had been shoved into an omnibus spending bill at the last minute as part of a deal between Republicans and President Bill Clinton, and because this was a time when, you know, Congress actually did its job, Sanders bit the bullet and voted for the whole package - CFMA included - to keep the government open.>
As Hartmann goes on to point out, Gary Gensler was the one who pushed that CTMA into the Omnibus spending deal with help from Bill Clinton and the Republicans in Congress. Bernie found out about it, and in 2009 he put a hold on Gensler's nomination by Obama to head the CTFC. Gensler was eventually confirmed anyway. Then Gensler told Hillary how to hit Bernie for supposedly supporting something that Gensler himself had jammed into an Omnibus spending bill.
This is who the Clintons are and how they operate. It is karma that the Wall Street weasel Gensler will be hosting a high dollar fundraiser for Hillary in Hong Kong while Bernie is at the Vatican talking about income inequality and the poor.
