"I can no longer be a Clinton supporter in the name of Feminism" - bell hooks

Last edited Fri Apr 15, 2016, 02:57 PM - Edit history (1)

"Identity politics vs. Who are you and what do you stand for? That's why Baldwin says, 'It's not a question if your gay or straight or black or white, what do you stand for? who are you?' "

Regarding bell hooks not being capitalized:
As a writer, she chose the pseudonym, bell hooks, in tribute to her mother and great-grandmother. She decided not to capitalize her new name to place focus on her work rather than her name, on her ideas rather than her personality.

16. How so? One of her books?

I'm honestly curious, I haven't read her work, but I'm making it a priority as soon as I get through the three already waiting for me.

21. yep, I've read about 5 of her books

my favorite is 'where we stand' because it was the first time I really saw intersectional feminism - the book looks at racism, classism, and sexism and how they frequently intersect

killing rage is also super good - ta-nehisi coates before ta-nehisi coates

she's also a fellow kentuckian!

5. This should go viral

Bell Hooks is hundreds of times smarter than Hillary and she is a womanist more than a feminist. Hillary is neither she is a poser who uses the term feminist without actually being a feminist. It should be no more accepted that Hillary is a feminist than if I went around claiming to be a Republican yet always talked about civil rights and told people that we have too much military intervention going on in the world. Republicans wouldn't in anyway accept me as a Republican. So, why should feminists believe Hillary is a feminist when she lobbies for more war and she won't fight for social justice.

Goddess willing, whenever I'm out of the military-- be it after my med board goes through, or after my contract ends-- but that's why I proposed. She has wisdom I don't.

20. How much time do you have left? My neice just joined the Air Force, stationed in Omaha...

Didn't stop her from getting married and now she is expecting, this all happening in less then a year. Are you overseas? They are much younger so moving there wasn't a huge deal and her husband just finished his service.

I had an assignment to Spangdahlem(Germany) coming out of tech training, and then "Sorry, we're diverting you to Virginia". Been trying to get off this base for the past three years.

14. Fixed and I decided to look into it:

As a writer, she chose the pseudonym, bell hooks, in tribute to her mother and great-grandmother. She decided not to capitalize her new name to place focus on her work rather than her name, on her ideas rather than her personality.

I like and admire her even more now and I understand why she can't support Hillary.

17. That point when she says how we always wanted a woman president... that hit me poignantly.

I hadn't thought about it that way, but I always dreamed of a woman being president who had *feminist sensibilities*... in my view, Hillary doesn't have that... Her militarism, her pay to play... etc... Makes me choked up to think that this is the closest we're getting to the dream...

My dreams for a woman president were always of a woman who does it differently, that that is the gift a woman president would bring.

This? This is about scoring a big point in the checkmark column. That's all!

......I'd like that to be discussed so much more in depth. Without the knee-jerk reaction comments, one can only hope.

27. The entire gender argument for Hillary being president, despite her penchant for war and fracking

the TPP, among a lot of other things that are bad for EVERYONE, is totally and completely bogus.

Hillary is just using that argument to further her own ambition. IMO she is not a feminist in any way, shape, or form. I am 70, worked through the years of fighting to be treated equally, and electing someone just because they are a woman, despite real negatives for me, is not what feminism is all about.

28. I have always read and assigned bell hooks as necessary reading

It surprises me that so many people who say they are so informed on these threads do not know bell hooks or the impact she has had on feminism. She is significant. The book Teaching to Transgress is a classic work.
I have always said I cannot support a Clinton under any circumstances because I am a feminist, because I am a parent, because I care about the future. Clinton is both a neoconservative and a neoliberal.

I agree with what Melissa Alexander whose groundbreaking book the New Jim Crow has said about Clinton. I do not know what is so difficult to understand ...

I have tried to think about voting for Clinton if Sanders is not the nominee ... and I just cannot ... for so many reasons
