Related: About this forumMy take on the Papal Meeting
I believe Bernie Sanders was given an "accidental meeting" which essentially is a situation where I can't formally meet with you but we can run into each other in a hallway. They said a few words and there were no photographs. I'm pretty sure this was pre-arranged with rules established otherwise someone on Sanders staff would have nabbed a photograph.
The Pope and Bernie agree on a few things economically so it makes sense the Pope would say hi but wouldn't want to seem like he is injecting himself into an election.
I also think Bernie's team inflated the meeting afterwards and got a literal Papal smack down with the Pope basically saying I didn't plan it he was just there.
I don't believe it was a true accident otherwise there would be pictures and I also don't believe he was granted a private audience.
I also think NY is a foregone conclusion by both campaigns with Hillary in California and Bernie in Italy.

(856 posts)WOW!!! Here are the Facts: Comment posted on DU:
"Bernie said that he, his wife and Monsignor Soldano met with the Pope and Bernie was very clear when he emphasized that this was not an endorsement. It was not political! It was just a nice moment.
The Pope is saying the same thing! He and Bernie met, and anyone who interjects politics into this need to "see a psychiatrist." The Pope's own words.
I don't know how much clearer EVERYONE WHO WAS THERE can be!
The Daily Need Bin, a Clinton Campaign website that is used to spread Clinton talking points, recklessly speculated that the Pope made a "strong rebuke of Sanders." OMG...just no.
The Pope said no such thing! LOL...not even close!
These talking Clinton points need to be reworked into something that isn't completely laughable.

As part of more speculation. Both candidates are out of the state that votes on Tuesday for two days. Wonder what their polls say.

(45,251 posts)A spokesman for the Vatican confirmed the meeting and said they spoke about foreign policy and climate change before the pontiff headed to the Greek island of Lesbos to see a refugee camp. http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/bernie-sanders-met-pope-francis/story?id=38444250
The Pope does not want to be seen as meddling in US Politics. That does not equal smacking down Sanders. DU is so unreal.

(45,251 posts)BTW, you went from "smack down" to "distance."
If the pope had wanted to smack Bernie down or distance himself, his spokesperson would not have confirmed the meeting, including citing the subjects about which they spoke. The Vatican is not a democracy and Vatican spokespersons don't have first amendment rights. Believe what you want, though.
The amount of crap that has been posted about Bernie, the Vatican, etc since April 8 is amazing.

When I came down, he introduced himself, I greeted him with a handshake, and nothing more, the pope added. Its common courtesy, this is called common courtesy."

(8,175 posts)This is what Sachs said the Pope did in the meeting with Sanders. He was there.
Pope Francis thanked the senator formally for coming to the Vatican and for participating in the meeting at the Academy, Sachs recounted, adding that the Pope explained that an earlier start than expected this morning meant he couldnt greet the conference participants last night as has had been originally planned. He thanked the senator for understanding and appreciated that he had come and participated, Sachs said. The senator wished him well on today's journey and the Pope wished Senator Sanders and his wife very well and then the meeting concluded and the Pope left for Greece.

When the Pope said: This is "nothing more" to the reporters on the plane
I believe he was saying nothing political was said. It was just gracious words of thanks, greetings and well wishes to each other. It was nothing political. I think that is what the Pope meant when talking to the reporters. I don't think it makes him a liar, nor does it contradict what he said on the plane with what Sachs said about the meet and greet. It was just a convenient way to answer their question.
It does not make the Pope a liar, just that he was establishing that the meeting was not an endorsement or his getting involved in our political campaign. I don't know what was said prior to his answer to the reporters. Maybe they asked him is he was endorsing Sanders and that was his reply. People need to stop trying to be so literal.

(42,862 posts)He "met" the pope only in the sense that he snagged him in the foyer (at 6AM) as the Pope was leaving for Greece.
Bernie did not "meet with" the Pope. Such phrasing implies that he had an audience with the Pope. This simply did not happen, yet Bernie, his campaign, and his supporters continue to use misleading and inaccurate phrasing like that. WHY?
Bernie did not have a "private meeting" with the Pope. A "private meeting" is BEHIND CLOSED DOORS, and generally when a high-profile meeting like that occurs, there'll be PHOTOGRAPHERS in a formal RECEPTION ALL and perhaps an traditional giving or exchanging of gifts, mementos, or tokens of appreciation. (And an actual meeting will certainly last for longer than the duration of whatever niceties that can be blurted out during a handshake!)
NONE of those things happened ... and still, Bernie, his campaign and his supporters continue to use misleading and accurate phrasing that gives the wrong impression of the exact nature of the "meeting". WHY?
From the very beginning, BS&Co have been cagey and less than forthcoming about the who's why's how's and very nature of the trip. FOR WHAT PURPOSE?
We've seen this type of behavior before in one of Bernie's early TV ads where he takes a flattering quote (about Bernie) that comes from an endorsement of Hillary ... then sandwiched-in that quote WITHIN a short list of others that have actually endorsed him ... THUS GIVING THE FALSE APPEARANCE that he was endorsed by that paper that didn't.
A clever trick, but misleading. That doesn't speak well for the character of a campaign of a man who takes such personal pride in such things. WHAT ARE WE TO MAKE OF THAT when we look at the evidence instead of the "words words words"?
I learned a lot about Bernie's Weekend with the Pope ... but the message I got isn't the one that Bernie and his campaign were trying to create. I wasn't fooled.

(296,848 posts)so full of it.. like that's going to make anyone think he belongs in the White House.
OH that's right .. I forgot about that shite scheme of his.. take a newspaper that endorsed Hillary and take a flattering quote about him in that very endorsement and insinuate the newspaper endorsed him instead.
I was hoping at the time that Newspapers that endorsed Hillary would just not say anything nice about BS because he would just steal it as an endorsement.
They never did have faith in their grassroots revolution. This is all on BS.. he hired all those craven managers and thought he could win by playing the purity card and all the while being the opposite.
berni got busted in Rome by the Pope.. not something you'd want to take away from your Roman Holiday.
