Bring it on Obama! Hillary lied to you!

The correspondence between Secretary Hillary Clinton and Sidney Blumenthal. [View all]
The purpose of this article is to shed a spotlight on the email correspondence between Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Sidney Blumenthal, a civilian, during her tenure as Secretary of State. Using https://wikileaks.org/clinton-emails/ and the search terms "Blumenthal confidential", 562 results appeared (this report lists only emails from the first 301 results). While, all the emails are marked "unclassified" they are also marked "confidential" and ostensibly paint a picture of utilizing Sidney Blumenthal as an intelligence source on various state matters.

This is problematic because while the emails were not classified, they show possible damning evidence of corresponding with Mr. Blumenthal, who was then employed by the Clinton Foundation, not the state department, and was not given proper security clearance to pass along sensitive intelligence to Secretary Clinton. In turn, he did not email her without response, she responded regarding these highly sensitive matters. Since, their correspondence is extensive, some emails will be referenced, that were and were not retroactively classified, to highlight her possible violation of state security rules.

Sidney Blumenthal (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sidney_Blumenthal):
Relationship to Secretary of State Clinton:

"After her January 2009 appointment as Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton wanted to hire Blumenthal. However, Obama's chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, blocked his selection due to lingering anger among President Barack Obama's aides over Blumenthal's role in promoting negative stories about Obama during the Democratic primary. According to a report in the New York Times, "Emanuel talked with Mrs. Clinton ... and explained that bringing Mr. Blumenthal on board was a no-go. The bad blood among his colleagues was too deep, and the last thing the administration needed, he concluded, was dissension and drama in the ranks. In short, Mr. Blumenthal was out.

Blumenthal, a longtime confidant of Bill and Hillary Clinton, earned about $10,000 a month as a full-time employee of the Clinton Foundation. During the 2011 uprising in Libya against Muammar Gaddafi, Blumenthal prepared, from public and other sources, about 25 memos which he sent as emails to Clinton in 2011 and 2012, which she shared through her aide, Jake Sullivan, with senior State Department personnel...

The House Select Committee on Benghazi, headed by Representative Trey Gowdy (R-SC) served a subpoena on Blumenthal on May 19, 2015 for a deposition to be held on June 3, according to Reuters. Blumenthal's name came up during the October 22, 2015 full committee public questioning of Hillary Clinton regarding the Benghazi incident, as one of the alleged sources of Hillary Clinton's intelligence. During this hearing Democratic members asked that Blumenthal's deposition transcript be made public so that comments regarding his involvement could be placed in context. The motion was defeated by a voice vote, followed by a roll call vote along party lines."

These European officials are concerned that the ongoing conflict in Syria will lead to uprisings in these countries that will bring increasingly conservative Islamic regimes into power, replacing existing secular or moderate regimes. Re: Iran, Saudi

"Had dinner last night (Tuesday, February 16) with Joschka Fischer. We had an interesting conversation on Iran and Saudi Arabia, among other things. (As you know Fischer is now director of the Nabucco pipeline project.) On Iran, harsh, targeted sanctions are absolutely necessary, but are most effective diplomatically when always coupled with an offer to negotiate.

The iron fist in the velvet glove approach achieves several objectives: According to Fischer's intelligence, Ahmanijehad wished some negotiated settlement but was blocked. The regime has splits at the top. Perhaps true, perhaps not. But constantly pushing negotiations alongside sanctions puts additional pressure on internal divisions, whatever they are. Extending an open hand while brandishing a stick closes diplomatic and political room to maneuver for Iran. Its refusal to accept the open hand justifies application of the stick. Even when sanctions are enforced it always remains useful to say another way is open. The damage done to Iran is therefore the result of its own choice. This approach also aids the opposition. A purely condign
sanctions strategy can contribute to the regime's will to punish and tighten repression. Talking of regime change, of course, undermines the cause of regime change. It is a gift to the regime. The opposition is a new factor in the Iran equation that must be taken into account on the political and moral level. Pushed to the wall, the regime may feel compelled to repress, which might involve thousands or tens of thousands of political killings. On Saudi Arabia, Fischer points out
that if Iran develops nuclear weaponry the Saudis already have their own bomb. The Saudis invested in Pakistan's nuclear weaponry partly for this eventuality; that's their bomb in reserve."

According to knowledgeable individuals, as part of this effort, the two leaders, in private conversations, also intend to press the leaders of the NTC to reward their early support for the rebellion against Muammar al Qaddafi. "The Wikileaks documents can be cast as reflecting a positive light on the U.S. government and diplomacy. Your statement about how the documents underscored the Iranian nuclear threat is headed in the right direction.

1. The Wikileaks disclosure is the opposite of the Pentagon Papers. The Pentagon Papers provided evidence from an internal study conducted by the Department of Defense that the U.S. administration was not telling the truth about the Vietnam War. On the contrary, the Wikileaks papers prove that the U.S. government today has been telling the truth about the threats we face in the world.

2. The Wikileaks papers prove that American diplomats are hard at work at the difficult, often frustrating job of protecting and advancing our interests in the world. These documents are testimony to the diligence, intelligence and clear mindedness of our diplomats. Our diplomats are doing their work on the frontline of national security."

Forcing the scandal public and his resignation would have been the trifecta--leaks, Benghazi, then Petraeus-- allowing Romney to argue that Obama had created a national security collapse. My thought is that Leahy should be in this now and that Feinstein should be made aware, if she is not already, of the October Surprise scenario.

What he is not doing is speaking against her for this or anything else. There is a very good reason for that. She reported to him and he either did not see this in real time or he allowed it to continue rather than have to deal with a cataclysmic rupture of his administration and the Democratic party. this whole notion of a forthcoming indictment needs to stop. If President Obama let Dubya and Darth Cheney walk away unscathed, there's no way he's going to allow his DOJ to come after Hillary.

Instead, this issue is going to:

a. Become mud that's flung at HRC pretty much constantly during the GE, and if she wins
b. It'll become the first of an endless string of 'investigative hearings' against President Clinton, any of which could lead to impeachment talk and hearings.

That's what we're in for for at least four years. It's still better than the alternative, but that's where all of this is going to go.

I think Bernie showed a lot of class by leaving this alone, but in some ways I wonder if he should've hammered away at this during the primary to both get it out there before the GE and to take her candidacy down now as opposed to during the GE.

For the shit to really hit the fan an indictment is not necessary. If the FBI RECOMMENDS an indictment, that will be the key moment. No matter what Obama chooses to do at that point, it's GAME OVER.

Hillary is already in trouble with independent voters. Having the FBI recommend that she be prosecuted will drive them away almost entirely, indictment or not. The Hillary campaign will not be able to sell it as a partisan attack.

Even if the FBI doesn't recommend action, the emails give the republicans a treasure trove of avenues to keep a Clinton administration tied up in investigations for four years or more. I suspect the State Department/Clinton Foundation interactions will be the most serious.

And yes, Bernie should have been talking about this. He's been way too nice.

as this is already, as you said, a treasure trove of material to use in the GE in addition to the DECADES of garbage they're going to throw at her for months on a daily or even hourly basis. Even if nothing else happens, the stage has been set.

That's why I sorta laugh when I see HRC, one of her mucky mucks with the campaign or some of her more ardent supporters complaining about how 'nasty' the SBS campaign has been. They can't be serious. His campaign is literally going to seem like a spa day compared to the pack of jackals that will be tearing away at her entire candidacy in an absolutely relentless, shameless and in some ways reckless manner. It's going to be so, so ugly. They haven't seen anything yet.

That's one of the things that I actually appreciated about the HRC campaign in 08. It was dirty enough that when Obama moved into the GE dealing with the scummy repuke machine wasn't that big of a shock. HRC supporters, if they really think SBS has been 'mean' in the primary, are in for an astounding shock in a few months when all these years of hate towards the Clintons is unleashed with a fury.

although the Obama White House believed Blumenthal had spread false rumors about Obama during the 2008 campaign, and although Obama had banned Blumenthal from any State Dept business, SOS Clinton kept up a steady and solicited correspondence with Blumenthal behind Obama's back:

And despite ample evidence on the public record for months that Clinton repeatedly asked Blumenthal to keep sending her updates on Libya and other matters, she repeated previous assertions that his advice was unsolicited.

"I did not ask him to send me the information that he sent me," Clinton said.

"You wrote to him, 'Another keeper, thanks' and 'Please keep them coming
....Greetings from Kabul and thanks for keeping this stuff coming,'" Gowdy shot back.

Clinton then shifted slightly, conceding that she urged Blumenthal to keep up the flow
. "They started out unsolicited and, as I said, some were of interest," she said.

.....You said they were -- you said they were unsolicited," the chairman said.

While Clinton minimized the significance of what Blumenthal sent along, she did not dismiss it entirely, and she defended forwarding the information to aides who sometimes scrambled to respond to the unusual dispatches.

"Some of it I found interesting....

....Allegations relating to Blumenthal's role in that campaign are what kept him from joining the State Department in 2009. Obama aides were convinced that Blumenthal spread false personal and policy rumors about Obama during the battle between Clinton and Obama for the Democratic nomination. While Clinton had more authority to name State Department personnel than any other Obama Cabinet member, Blumenthal was blacklisted--effectively banished by the White House.

When Gowdy asked about Blumenthal's rejection, Clinton didn't dispute it, but said she couldn't remember or didn't know who at the White House put the kibosh on her regular correspondent.

Hillary was taking State Dept Advice from Blumenthal and others with Business interests in Libya:

Plus, all the while, Blumenthal was working for the Clinton Foundation:

International New York Times May 20, 2015 Wednesday

Clinton friend's memos on Libya draw scrutiny to politics and business

NICHOLAS CONFESSORE and MICHAEL S. SCHMIDT
Clintons last occupied the White House, Sidney Blumenthal cast himself in varied roles:

speechwriter, in-house intellectual and press corps whisperer. …..Now, as Hillary Rodham Clinton embarks on her second presidential bid, Mr. Blumenthal's service to the Clintons is again under the spotlight. ……

….. a series of memos that Mr. Blumenthal - who was not an employee of the State Department - wrote to Mrs. Clinton about events unfolding in Libya before and after the death of Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi.

According to emails obtained by The New York Times, Mrs. Clinton, who was secretary of state at the time, took Mr. Blumenthal's advice seriously, forwarding his memos to senior diplomatic officials in Libya and Washington and at times asking them to respond. Mrs. Clinton continued to pass around his memos even after other senior diplomats concluded that Mr. Blumenthal's assessments were often unreliable.

But an examination by The Times suggests that Mr. Blumenthal's involvement was more wide-ranging and more complicated than previously known, embodying the blurry lines between business, politics and philanthropy that have enriched and vexed the Clintons.

While advising Mrs. Clinton on Libya, Mr. Blumenthal, who had been barred from a State Department job by aides to President Obama, was also employed by her family's philanthropy, the Clinton Foundation, to help with research, ''message guidance'' and the planning of commemorative events, according to foundation officials. During the same period, he also worked for organizations that helped lay the groundwork for Mrs. Clinton's 2016 campaign.

Much of the Libya intelligence that Mr. Blumenthal passed on to Mrs. Clinton appears to have come from a group of business associates he was advising as they sought to win contracts from the Libyan transitional government.

The venture, which was ultimately unsuccessful, involved other Clinton friends, a private military contractor and one former C.I.A. spy seeking to get in on the ground floor of the new Libyan economy.

The projects …..would have required State Department permits, but foundered before the business partners could seek official approval.

The Libya venture came together in 2011 when David L. Grange, a retired Army general, joined with a new New York firm, Constellations Group, to pursue business leads in Libya. Constellations Group, led by a professional fund-raiser and philanthropist named Bill White, was to provide the leads……

There have been far too many uninformed opinions put down. And especially the Clinton people, and Hillary herself, outright dismissing it.

It is far too late for that. The more I hear about the details, the more troubling it is.

about the security issues, the handling of classified materials and access by third party IT companies,
the concerns by the server company of a cover up, the Clinton Foundation public corruption investigation by the FBi,
and the debacle surrounding Blumenthal it's hard to dismiss as just a GOP hot air.....

Even if she is 'excused' or pardoned' or given a DOJ pass. The fact remains anyone else would not be allowed to hold public office.

Really, we can do better.
