The U.S. presidential election may turn out to be one of the world's biggest un-popularity contests.
Nearly half of American voters who support either Democrat Hillary Clinton or Republican Donald Trump for the White House said they will mainly be trying to block the other side from winning, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released Thursday.
The results reflect a deepening ideological divide in the United States, where people are becoming increasingly fearful of the opposing party, a feeling worsened by the likely matchup between the New York real estate tycoon and the former first lady, said Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginias Center for Politics.
"This phenomenon is called negative partisanship," Sabato said. "If we were trying to maximize the effect, we couldn't have found better nominees than Trump and Clinton."
Trump has won passionate supporters and vitriolic detractors for his blunt talk and hardline proposals, including his call for a ban on Muslims entering the United States, his vow to force Mexico to pay for a border wall, and his promise to renegotiate international trade deals.

(53,765 posts)The Obama coalition:
Sensible progressive whites who don't want Trump appointing the next 3 SCOTUS justices, Latino Americans, African Americans, women, gays, Asian Americans, Native Americans, and sensible, left-leaning and moderate independents collectively these demographic segments are who mostly voted for and elected President Obama twice, and will also elect Clinton to the presidency.
Notice pls that they are a very diverse group, not the angry whites and/or racist whites who support Trump.
The days of winning the presidency with the majority of the white vote are long gone.
Romney won a huge majority of the white vote and lost handily.

(17,064 posts)It's just being realistic. For a group claiming to be 'pragmatic', Hillarians do an awful lot of head in the sand and whistling past the graveyard. That's on you. Don't blame us, when we've warned you.

The virulent hatred coming from some in the Sanders camp at Clinton over doing her job as SOS is somewhat misplaced as she worked for the president.
Might as well direct that hatred towards any SOS who ever held the job, and for that matter, any president.
Realpolitik is not tiddlewinks.

(39,961 posts)No, it isn't.
Just because you believe your candidate has the best resume, doesn't mean that everybody else agrees with you.
A huge blind spot in the Hillary Clinton campaign and the DNC handling of this Presidential election is judging her appeal based upon Democratic voters.
Unfortunately, a sizable chunk of Democratic voters do not want to have no choice but to vote for her. She will not make up for shortfalls due to mere grudging support in terms of voter outreach, or mule-headed Democrats that choose to stay home with cross-over Republicans and Independents.
That's not tiddlywinks, and elections are not a game. If you find some facts unpleasant in politics, it's likely they are just the truth.

(53,765 posts)Every heard of the Obama coalition?
Sensible progressive whites who don't want Trump appointing the next 3 SCOTUS justices, Latino Americans, African Americans, women, gays, Asian Americans, Native Americans, and sensible, left-leaning and moderate independents collectively these demographic segments are who mostly voted for and elected President Obama twice, and will also elect the Dem nominee to the presidency most likely Clinton.
Notice pls that they are a very diverse group, not the angry whites and/or racist whites who support Trump, and we outnumber them.

(39,961 posts)Please imply how I am an angry white male because I agreed with you that politics isn't a game and had a different take on that statement than you did.
Please do proceed. I'm eager to hear all about my angry white masculinity.

(53,765 posts)That's obviously a reference to Trump supporters.
I don't think that applies to you, you sound more like a Sanders supporter who still can't accept the fact that he's not going to be the nominee.
I outlined those demographic segments who make up the Obama coalition to let you know who will trounce Trump.
Trounce Trump!
Has a nice ring to it don't you think?
Not too late to get on board.

(17,064 posts)They're no longer even pretending to want the left. That frees them up to go hard right.
Hillary to Bush donors:"I share your values".
Looks like a merger of RW parties coming up.

(3,687 posts)There is part on the Left any longer. Regardless of what you call it, merging the Disenfranchised republicans and the DLC, Blue Dog, Third Way right wing crowd, is NOT the Party of Democrats that I've voted for in the past.
This will be something new, Right Wing, Conservative, War prone, Corporate intense over Human Rights, Imperialistic and Democracy averse.....You know..... The New World Order. And the Clinton Cabal will be at the helm -
Unless we can get Bernie in there. This might be are last chance to keep our democracy.

(1,495 posts)People tend to be more enthusiastic when they vote FOR someone then when they vote AGAINST someone. We Dems saw it in 2004 when we were voting AGAINST Bush and in 2008 when we were voting FOR Obama. Big difference in the mood of the electorate.
Among Democrats.
Independents? Not so much.
